because of how violent and barbaric the mongols were, every time they would conquer land they would raid, pillage, and burn villages and farms until there was nothing left. this not only created great distrust and hatred against the mongol overlords, but it also caused economic and agricultural destruction. farms were burnt and destroyed and food shortages became common. under the mongols many starved.

after conquering villages, towns, and cites, the Mongol Hordes would often times use prisoners captured and taken from conquered areas as meat shields when facing the Chinese armies. they did this not only to put fear into the hearts of the enemy, but to also try and get them not to fire so that they wouldn't have to end lives of their own men and women. it also meant that the invading Mongol forces would have greater protection and that (if they had still chosen to fire) the Chinese would be lower on ammunition (arrows), therefore making Mongol advances easier.
