As my aspired profession being a chef, this jacket means a lot. There's a famous saying in the world of cooking that if you have less dirt in your jacket, that means you're not doing anything and you lack in the kitchen. However, not all the time. When you have reached a higher position being a chef, a clean chef's jacket is a must. Especially when you're going to face an important guest or a VIP to describe a requested dish, you need to be pleasant looking - this means you're disciplined and meticulous with your work and knows your way around the kitchen without leaving a mess.

Undershirt is also required. When you're assigned in the back of the house, this means more physical work. Therefore, there's a possibility that you will sweat and it will make your chef's jacket wet or smell. This protects and provides absorbent layer to your chef's jacket.

Socks provide protection by adding a layer between the shoe and preventing blisters as we walk & stand all day in the kitchen.

Wearing a chef's hat is basically a way to keep hair out of food and maintain hygiene and cleanliness in the kitchen. Fun fact: The size of the chef hat signifies the hierarchy of chefs in a kitchen, the taller the hat, the more important the chef was. And the pleats were not just an interesting detail, rather the number of pleats noted how many recipes a chef had mastered - 100 pleats, 100 recipes. The wearing of hats was also to create a sense of unity in the kitchen.

Makeup is now allowed at some establishments however there's a limitation to it. As lady cooks are often placed outside for example, to serve/cook at the omelette station at breakfast, then it's advisable to wear waterproof makeup because it doesn’t melt off and looked bad. Also, it is encourage to put light makeup only to prevent makeup fallouts to the food. As for the nails, chef's need to have their nails short and this is required for all of the staff working in contact with food.
