Indeed the care and warmth of a loved one are crucial to exhibit intrinsic emotions like happiness, and platonic and romantic love; until the love and care from one is no longer needed due to undiscovered gruesome acts that arise. Both Ginny and Georgia and You convey how a relationship, either platonic or romantic, can cause one to experience symptoms of mental instability. As Ginny and Beck from both shows are presented with the truth, Georgia and Joe committing an act of homicide, they subsequently construct a shield that augments cynicism. Emphasizing that Ginny is a teen in high school, showcases that this lack of uncertainty and hesitation will ensure her low social mobility, similar to Beck in the job industry. Ironically, as these acts harmed Beck and Ginny, Georgia and Joe both implement gaslighting agendas by exclaiming the homicidal acts they engaged in was an effort to protect them which showcases by their love for each partner. Therefore, in a romantic setting, Beck’s inability to trust stemmed from Joe’s obsession over her which ultimately caused these acts, whereas Ginny’s acts of self-harm and ominous general perception stemmed from Georgia, her mother; proving that mental instability is not always innate and can be prompted, and although the events are drastic the depiction of mental health is sometimes reasonable.

The series Ginny and Georgia, focuses on teenage ominous as Ginny is expected to excel in academics and force her happiness to her friends subsequent to discovering her mother’s actions, being the murder of her previous fiances. Ominous because she endures the pressure of school and family drama many teens are not experiencing shown as she exclaims wanting to eradicate her existence to her therapist. Presented with acts her mother committed, she chooses to isolate herself and exhibit acts of self-harm, in this scene she is shown sobbing hysterically while burning herself as she questions her mother’s character and false nice, wealthy, pretty persona (Welland, 2021). Considering she did not show signs of a mental condition before exemplifies that her self-harming was caused by disclosed information that correlated to her mother’s past. Emphasizing that she is an attending high school student allows for sympathy merely due to her lack of motivation in regard to school work, illustrated as she drops her advanced placement course and begins to elude less confidence in academics she once cared deeply for. Importantly, failing behind in academics and reaching an emotion of anger and fright that it becomes intrinsic to self-harm all correlate to mental instability. Denoting she began to encounter these avenues after the news of her mother committing an act of homicide was disclosed demonstrating that these acts were not innate but rather stemmed from not knowing her mother, the person she lived with and was raised by, was capable of such a gruesome act. In a platonic relationship, in this case, a daughter and her mother, should represent a robust and loving bond; however, simply because Ginny is faced with allegations concerning the robust and loving bond emphasizes confusion which can lead to or stem mental instability. Therefore, Ginny’s feelings of hurt and sorrow are reasonable considering the betrayal acts were performed by the one person most children look up to, her mother.

However, in this scene, Georgia is shown justifying her actions by exclaiming she was merely capable of homicide in an effort to protect her children, Ginny included. Then begins to introduce childhood trauma so the audience including Ginny can excuse homicide she clearly opposes, in gesture to deviate from the conversation; hoping to restore the robust and loving relationship they should represent (Welland, 2021). These gaslighting tactics become beneficial to Georgia as Ginny is coerced to sympathize; however, it does not diminish Ginny’s initial beliefs and further augmenting more stress onto Ginny by disclosing more trauma solely confuses her, which increases her desire to self-harm knowing she is the reason for death as her mother exclaims “she did it to protect her”. Emphasizing that Georgia’s gaslighting agendas contributed to Ginny’s mental instability. Therefore, within a platonic relationship, this scene depicts mental instability poorly because rather than focusing on Ginny’s overall mental health Georgia’s gaslighting agendas arise. Although this elevates the conflict it begins to diminish Ginny’s emotions showing there can be an excuse for causing signs of mental instability, which is heartwrenching considering she is the harmed one.

Additionally, the series You encapsulates a romantic relationship that similarly ensures one partner endures signs of mental instability due to the actions of the other in the relationship. Faced with love at first sight, Joe becomes obsessed with controlling Beck and begins to commit acts of homicide to importantly manage her existence. Beck eventually discovers items of dead friends and previous loved ones in a hidden box, sparking confusion and fright considering he had no connection with them. Soon after, Joe coercively isolates Beck in a locked cage and demands love in return for freedom, in this scene, she’s crying hysterically pleading to be let out (Sokoloff, Lence, 2018). Acts of frustration and misery begin to arise exemplifying her inability to trust her partner, and considering a romantic relationship should also demonstrate a loving and robust bond reinforces fright as it’s showcased this is not exhibited during this scene. Showcased by Beck’s augmented fright and confusion levels while in the cage and after disclosing items of her dead friends and previous lovers in Joe’s possession denotes these emotions were stemmed by his actions. Prior to this, she had no worry about spending every second with him emphasizing her rising mental instability displayed by signs of extreme fright, distress, and hopelessness was stemmed from actions Joe committed. In fact, merely because she is enclosed in a secret cage illustrates how her mentality of feeling hopelessness is reasonable considering she is alone and has no one to rely on.

Even though Joe inherently displays signs of a psychopath he begins to feasibly gaslight Beck into believing she was stalked, physically abused, enclosed, and lied to for her own protection subsequent to Beck escaping and enclosing him into the cage. Beck is shown stabbing Joe to escape and Joe is shown further manipulating her to attain his liking which would be beneficial to him; being let out of the cage (Sokoloff, Lence, 2018). This proves that Beck begins to compromise her innocence with strategies of escaping the cage as she utilizes a typewriter pin to stab Joe. Further showcasing that the trauma endured while enclosed is suffice and justifiable for stabbing him, most would concur; however, violence and aggression are highly associated with mental instability. But her worry is to escape and not to comply with her kidnapper’s wishes. In addition, Joe exclaims while enclosed in this scene his reasonings for protecting her so she and the audience can justify his actions simply because he shows great love for her. His gaslighting agendas also diminish her emotions of fright, hopelessness, and distress considering viewers would place unconditional love on a pedestal compared to homicide in an effort to have one partner for themselves.

Overall, both You and Ginny and Georgia demonstrate how mental instability can be constructed by either a romantic or platonic relationship, denoting that if one is enduring signs of mental instability, gaslighting and manipulation is not an act of understanding and should not diminish an initial symptom of a condition. Therefore, both series showcase how the individuals that began to exhibit signs of mental instability subsequent to disclosing information from their mother and partner, was a reasonable experience, and them as characters were allowed to grief and deviate from the person that caused the drama showing that mental health was conveyed well.
