He said, "We have to be more Mexican than the Mexicans and more American than the Americans, both at the same time! It's exhausting!" we have affected cultural change with our food, our music, our art, and our language.

I am a part of the Latino community in Oregon, more specifically the Mexican and Mexican American community. I was born and raised in Hillsboro to a Mexican American mother and a Mexican father who immigrated to the US as a 17 year old. To discuss my cultural background, it is important to first understand our history. We are all immigrants, either ourselves, sons or daughters of immigrants, or grandchildren of immigrants. In my case, my mom’s dad and grandparents immigrated when he was a baby from Northern Mexico in 1952. They worked as farmworkers in Texas and California, before settling there in the 1960’s. My father immigrated from Mexico in 1997 as a 17 year old, alone. The rest of his family, my grandparents, his brothers, and sister (my uncles and aunt) joined in the years after. When our family immigrated they didn’t know the language, the culture, they came with only a backpack of clothing and their legal documents, they stayed with friends or relatives until they could save money to get their own place, and they struggled. They went right to work, enrolled in school and did their best to assimilate into the American way of life. As the next generation was born, we had it easier. My cousins and I entered school not speaking English, but learned quickly. We soon became the translators for our family members who didn’t speak English well. We didn’t have to work fast food jobs, if we didn’t want to. We graduated high school on track. I have an American mother so things were just a little bit easier for me. I had more help navigating entering the post-secondary education system.

The United Farm Workers Movement (UFW) began in 1962 under the direction of union organizers Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. It was one of the most significant labor union and civil rights movements of its time and in US history. Their goal was to improve wages, working conditions, housing, benefits, and fair treatment of workers. The movement's success in achieving some of these goals, such as the passage of the Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975, impacted the lives of farmworkers and contributed to broader social change in the labor movement.

This TEDx is a great explanation of the life of an immigrant family. My family, like most, left Mexico because they were living in poverty and were looking for a better life. But life in the U.S. is hard too, and the life of an undocumented immigrant is even harder. When she spoke about living in fear of her family losing everything I was taken back to the time not too long ago when my family lived with that same fear. It is a fear that no one should have to live with.

The mass incarceration of Latino males has directly and devastatingly affected my family. Latino men are overrepresented in the U.S. prison population - in the federal prison system, approximately 32% of inmates are Latino and the number of Latinos in federal and state prisons has significantly increased over time.

Our family builds an ofrenda each year for Dia de los Muertos. The photo above is our ofrenda from last year. Our ofrenda has photos of our loved ones, religious statues, skulls, catrinas, momentos of our loved ones, flowers, prayer candles, rosary beads, and some treats that we offer for our loved ones. It takes us a long time to set up every year and is a very special time for us as we take time to make it just right, talk to our lost loved one and remember the times we had with them. There are always tears shed, laughs and memories shared. The Mexican community has affected the social change by religious syncretism through the traditions of Dia de los Muertos as Chapter 9 discussed.
