Like many other disorders Edwards syndrome is caused by an unusual amount of chromosomes. The problem occurs in the stages of cell division in early embryonic development. Embryonic development is the process in which the embryo develops. As a result, While most people have a pair of chromosome 18, children with Edwards syndrome will have 3 copies of chromosome 18.

There have been many tests that can be taken before the child is born but there is not much that you can do for a born child. Many children don't survive with Edward's Syndrome making it harder to do trials.
