         <description><![CDATA[<div>At age 12, she was raised by her older sister after being orphaned. She used her inheritance to study mathematics and astronomy at Vassar College, graduating in 1908.<br>After college, Clarke taught math and physics at a private school.<br>He spent some time studying civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, but left in 1912 to become a "human calculator" at the AT&amp;T telecommunications company.<br>While working at AT&amp;T, I was studying electrical engineering at Columbia University in the evenings.<br>In 1918, Clarke enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the following year she became the first woman to earn an M.S. (Master of Science) in electrical engineering from MIT.6<br>Clarke was the first female engineer to earn a professional position in America's oldest engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi.<br>In 1948, she became the first Fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.<br>In 1954, she also received the Achievement Award from the nonprofit Society of Women Engineers.<br>In 2015, Clarke was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.</div>]]></description>
