At age 12, she was raised by her older sister after being orphaned. She used her inheritance to study mathematics and astronomy at Vassar College, graduating in 1908.
After college, Clarke taught math and physics at a private school.
He spent some time studying civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, but left in 1912 to become a "human calculator" at the AT&T telecommunications company.
While working at AT&T, I was studying electrical engineering at Columbia University in the evenings.
In 1918, Clarke enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the following year she became the first woman to earn an M.S. (Master of Science) in electrical engineering from MIT.6
Clarke was the first female engineer to earn a professional position in America's oldest engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi.
In 1948, she became the first Fellow of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers.
In 1954, she also received the Achievement Award from the nonprofit Society of Women Engineers.
In 2015, Clarke was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
