The trial became overheated and Reverend Syke made Jem and Scout go home, but they didn't. Mr. Ewell gave a testimony that Tom Robinson beat Mayella. He gave quite a descriptive explanation about the very situation in which Mayella's right eye was beaten up. To falsify Mr. Ewell's statement, Mr. Atticus showed his left-handedness by directing him to write his name. This demonstrated that Mr. Ewell might be the culprit as left-handed people beat the victim on the victim's right eye.

(Old sarum bunch)
The Old Sarum Bunch were a tribe or gang that resided in the northern part of the country. The Cunninghams were a part of the gang, and Boo hung out with them before he got into trouble.

Henry Woodfin Grady (May 24, 1850 – December 23, 1889) was an American journalist and orator who helped reintegrate the states of the Confederacy into the Union after the American Civil War. Grady encouraged the industrialization of the South.

(The ku klux klan)
The Ku Klux Klan, with its long history of violence, is the oldest and most infamous of American hate groups. Although Black Americans have typically been the Klan’s primary target, adherents also attack Jewish people, persons who have immigrated to the United States, and members of the LGBTQ community.

(Ku klux klan/Anti-Catholics)
During the Ku Klux Klan’s revival during the 1920s, the organization formed a strong presence in the Pacific Northwest. In Washington, the majority of the Klan’s work was devoted to passing an anti-Catholic school initiative and attempting to spread their particular brand of white, Protestant supremacy. Yet while Oregon passed an anti-Catholic school bill in 1922, heavily backed by the Oregon Klan, Washington voters rejected a similar measure–and the influence of the Washington Klan–two years later. This paper argues that the reason the bill, known as Initiative 49, did not pass in Washington State is, first of all, poor timing. Because it was placed on the ballot two years after the passing of the Oregon bill in 1922, the United States Federal Court had moved in the interim to declare the bill unconstitutional. The initiative also failed because it faced strong opposition, not only by Washington Catholics, but by many other powerful groups.

Jem, Scout, and Dill patiently wait for most of the courthouse crowd to enter, aiming to discreetly slip in unnoticed by Atticus. However, their delay leads them to find seats in the balcony, where Black spectators are required to sit. From this vantage point, they can observe the entire courtroom. The trial is presided over by Judge Taylor, an elderly man known for his informal courtroom style. Mr. Gilmer, the prosecutor, questions Heck Tate, who recounts how Bob Ewell had urged him to go to the Ewell house on the night of November 21. Tate discovered Mayella bruised and beaten, and she claimed Tom Robinson had raped her. Atticus cross-examines the witness, revealing that no doctor was summoned and that Mayella's injuries were concentrated on the right side of her face.

After some pleading, Dill’s mother allows him to stay. After this, things go downhill quickly. One evening, Mr. Tateknocks and asks Atticus to come outside. Scout knows that men only talk outside for death or politics and wonders who died. She and Jem try to follow, but Atticus sends them back in. They turn out the lights and put their noses to the window screens to listen to Mr. Tate, Atticus, and Mr. Link Deastalk about the trial, getting a change of venue, and whether “they” will get drunk on a Sunday.
Mr. Deas tells Atticus that he has everything to lose and Atticus asks if he really thinks that. He says that Tommight go to the chair, but he has to tell the truth. The men move closer to Atticus and Jem screams that the phone is ringing. The men in the yard scatter and Scout sees that it’s her neighbors. Atticus comes inside, turns the living room light on, and picks up his paper. Jem asks if the men wanted to get Atticus, but Atticus assures him that they were friends, not a gang or the Klan.
