Mentor texts are used as example texts for students to imitate during a writing process. Students need high quality examples when composing narrative essays, which are short writings about a personal experience. An example of this is "Good Housekeeping" by Bailey White, a narrative essay about the value two daughters and a mother put on cleaning before guests visit. ELA students also write persuasive essays, explaining with evidence why they take a position on an issue. "Proclamation of the Indians of Alcatraz" by the Indians of Alcatraz is a persuasive essay addressed to the president of the United States. The Indians write to persuade the president to give the original Indian occupants the land. These are two of the many types of writings that can be taught with mentor texts. These texts can be written by professional writers or by the teacher.
