AM: Research Walls

In groups, using the studio boards map out your research and making. You will need to bring print outs and photocopies of key texts, transcripts of interviews, documentation of fieldwork, artist/designer references, as well as material and process experiments. The more you bring with you the better. In groups you will be asked to consider the connections, convergences and emergent relationships within your research, identifying a series of keywords in relation to your shared research material.

PM: A Glossary of Terms

Identify which of the keywords are most appropriate to your own practice and Major Project (this can be pulled from your own research or that of others). Write definitions for each of these words. Each definition should be specific to how it applies within your project, building your own Major Project Index. A shared Excel document will be provided in order for you to share your keywords and definitions with the whole group.

AM & PM: Make/ReMake

Bring in a visual starting point from your Major Project, this can be an initial experiment, an example of your research or an object that relates to your project in some way. From these starting points you will make and remake your work/idea through a selection of work stations and prompts, each designed to encourage iterative making.   

AM & PM: My Career Defining Retrospective

Working in small teams (based on Reader groups) students will use NewArt.City to construct a virtual exhibition space populating with examples of the work they have produced in Unit 2.

New Art City is a virtual exhibition toolkit for new media art with a focus on copresence and experiencing digital art together. Shows are real-time multiplayer and accessed using a web browser on computer or mobile device, with no need to register, install extra software or enter any personal information. Using built-in tools to manage artworks and space layouts, curators and organizers can create a show and hold a virtual exhibition online. Participants can attend virtual openings together, chat and see each other moving around the space while experiencing digital art in its original format.

AM: Object Orientated Writing

A series of writing exercises that asks you to explore the potential of writing and language in relation to your practice. You will be led towards an approach that attempts to speak through the work instead of writing about or describing the work, starting with either a object that relates to your major project work or an image of particular significance, this could be one you have made or one that you have found.

PM: Cataloging

Using work generated across the 4 workshops you will begin assembling a catalog in preparation for the Major Project Exhibition in July. Working in small teams with a InDesign template, students will sequence and layer their experiments and works in progress, building an experimental publication that is reflective of the breadth and diversity of your Major Projects.

The process of translating your individual contributions to the reader so that they work together — or commune, or relate — can be a creative process. For example, transcribing audio into text or turning text into audio requires you to think about what is gained or lost in the movement from one form to another.  Does the voice change, figuratively or literally? Can you use the translation to emphasise or focus on the parts of each reference that relate to the rest? The changes made through translation can be a way of unifying your references simply by pushing them all through the same process. Translation is also be a collective process, whereby multiple voices or languages are brought together.

In our third workshop together, we will translate references so that we can make connections between them, and we will begin to think about the “language” of your reader and how it can/should be read.

During this session, we will receive an introduction to ReadyMag, the programme that we will use to publish the readers.

As you begin to compile your reader, there will be an infinite number of ways to combine the content and to direct the way that your reader may encounter them. The compilation of your reader will be decided in the way that the references are edited so that they can be read together coherently and purposefully. This session will cover the editing “down” of references so that the references are curated and considered for the specific context of this reader. We will also consider how to edit “through” the references, considering the order of the reader and the ways to locate, highlight and otherwise create connections between each reference.

In this final workshop together, we will conduct quick editing and compiling exercises to begin testing the ways your reader content can and will come together. We will also use the process of collaboratively editing the references to establish a clear voice or curation of the content, ready to use in your final seminar sessions with your reader supervisors. 

During this session, each reader group will meet with Rory to discuss ReadyMag and any questions or concerns they have with the software.

These references should each take a DIFFERENT format. For example, one text, one audio clip, one film clip. As well as text, sound and film, other formats include image, performance, object, virtual/digital references, and environments. Preferably, the format of the reference will be three original formats, as, in this session, we will be working with ideas and processes around translation.

You should bring a physical copy of each reference. So, if it’s audio, have the sound ready to play on a phone or speaker (that you will bring with you).

Text-based references have a maximum of 500 words. Audio and Video references have a maximum of 3 minutes.
