The makeup represents the ideologies, most prevalent in the fifties, that women should always be well presented, according to the social expectations. The apple that Bud Park ate represents progression, which can be linked to the biblical reference of the forbidden fruit.

The first scene where bud is eating chips and watching tv while his step sister is trying to get laid shows today’s values are very diverse and buds parents are divorced.On the other hand, Big Bob holds traditional American family values. The husband goes off to work, the wife stays home. When the husband comes home from work, there should be dinner on the table and a clean house.

The film starts with a very dark Pleasantville, where people think that they are happy if they have a perfect life, where everyone likes the same things.
But as time goes
on, the habitants of Pleasantville begin to experience new things and they realize that they weren’t happy at all and that change is needed. They begin to fight
for the things that they like and in the end, Pleasantville turns in to a
liberal, tolerant, enlightened, unified community, as it is in the present.
