She becomes his ideal subject, and he paints a large and colorful nude of her on the window of the soda shop. For Bill, and those other citizens of the town who have become "colored" and are sexually liberated, the mural is a symbol of desire and aesthetics, a positive image meant to celebrate the human form. Additionally, it represents change and female liberation, as Betty has gone from repressed housewife to muse.

The film illustrates America just like it was back in those times, with a good house, car, stability, and of course, the women at home and the men working. But the aim of the film is also to show that things changed. And they changed in a better way. Just like they changed on the film, they also changed on real life. No more stereotypes, and usual a life that is not so "simple" as it used to be.

Almost everything in this film is a symbol. First, the most obvious one, color, in this film color represents freedom of expression abd thought when a character is colored it means they have accepted who they really are and who they want ro be. Secondly, books, in a world all about old values and conformity it is fitting that books are blank because books represent fantasies, imagination and wondering about the outside world all of which are a risk to the imposed status quo, it's only when the world starts to gain color that books recover what was written in them. Finally, art, like books and color art is all about expressing one's self and displaying it to the world so it is natural that when Mr. Johnson sees art for the first time it makes something inside him wake up.
