In the song "Wing$", Macklemore raps about his childhood experience with consumerism. The subject of the song is the unhealthy desire he had in his childhood for nice shoes like Air Jordans and Air Maxes. There is no specific occasion, he is just rapping about the whole situation in general. The audience is the general population of America. The purpose of the song is to show how he was deceived and negatively affected by consumerism and to tell people to not revere things so much. Present-day Macklemore is the speaker for most of the song. In some parts, though, the speaker is his childhood self. The tone throughout most of the piece is angry and afraid.

Lyrics Analysis - Logos

Logos is a persuasive tactic used to convince the audience of something using logic.
In the middle of the first verse he says "... and then my friend Carlos's brother got murdered for his fours." This is using logic to show the reality of the situation. He is showing that people had such an unhealthy desire for shoes that they would kill for them. The first line of the second verse is "We want what we can't have, commodity makes us want it." By saying this, he is explaining that a reason why so many people have these desires for nice shoes and other nice things is because they can't have them. The last line in the song is "... and now I see it's just another pair of shoes." This is an example of logos because this sobers the audience up and uses logic to convince the listeners that the shoes are not worth all of the trouble that they put some people through. This is because this huge monster that has been created by desire and expensiveness was really all just for another pair shoes. These lyrics show the use of logos because they use logic to persuade the listener to think a certain way about the consumerism.

Lyrics Analysis - Pathos

Pathos is a persuasive tactic used by a speaker to inflict an emotion in a listener in order for the listener to sympathize with the speaker.
In the third line of the song, the speaker is Macklemore's childhood self. In it he says "... this air bubble right here, it's gonna make me fly." In this line, he sounds optimistic which invokes a feeling of optimism in the listener and helps them understand how child Macklemore is feeling about his shoes at first. Later on in the verse childhood Macklemore says "I touched the net, Mom, I touched the net! This is the best day of my life." This captures the excitement that comes with touching the net of a basketball hoop for the first time. When this is heard, it arouses this excitement in the listener, and they empathize with child Macklemore. Present-day Macklemore goes on to describe what it was like to wear these nice shoes in school. He says "The box, the smell, the stuffing, the tread, at school, I was so cool." Here, he is describing what it is like to be wearing these shoes at school. This makes the listener feel sympathy for his childhood "coolness" at school in these shoes. Then, the mood changes. In the middle of the first verse, after he says "...my friend Carlos's brother got murdered for his fours.", his childhood self says the one word "Whoa." This makes the audience feel much more serious about the topic. Towards the end of the second verse present-day Macklemore says "... but see I look inside the mirror and think Phil Knight tricked us all." This uses pathos because it makes the listener feel angry and makes the listener think that Phil Knight did something wrong by marketing Nike so heavily. All of these lyrics are examples of pathos because they invoke some type of emotion in the listener and influence their thoughts about the ways of consumerism.

Lyrics Analysis - Ethos

Ethos is a persuasive tactic used to show that the speaker has credibility when speaking about a topic.
The first line of the song is "I was seven years old when I got my first pair." This shows that Macklemore knows about the subject of nice shoes, since he got his first pair when he was at the young age of seven. A few sentences into the first verse he says "Air Maxes were next." This again shows that he understands the world of nice shoes because he knows the timeline of footwear. Towards the end of the first verse he says "'Cause I wanted to be like Mike, right?" Here, he is saying that he wanted to be a great basketball player like Michael Jordan. Many other kids at that time also had this desire. This shows credibility and therefore ethos because he displaying an understanding of where the children's actions were coming from. These lyrics were examples of ethos because they show credibility in the speaker and change how the listener thinks of Macklemore.
