March 17th: ORAL MEDIATION

ORAL MEDIATION TASK - SPORTS

Your American friend Kate is keen on tennis and she loves Rafa Nadal. You’ve found an interesting article about his life philosophy that you know Kate will love. You have sent it to her but she doesn’t understand Spanish very well, so she wants you to tell her in English the most relevant information. (1) Read the text and record a 2-minute voice message for Kate; (2) I will give you some personal feedback and comments.

| 5 consejos de Rafa Nadal para triunfar en el deporte y en la vida 1- "Cuando uno hace lo que le apasiona, la sensación de sacrificio es menor". Así responde Rafa cuando le alaban su lucha y esfuerzo sobre la pista. 2- "Pese a mis problemas físicos y lesiones, nunca me he rendido y he seguido avanzando".

b.1.A Pili. It's good! As I said in other posts, you need to mention why you're telling Kate about it (is she having a hard time at work? why did this remind you of her? Then, in your text: check the pronunciation of "although", "improve"; and in grammar: remember we don't say "the life" (omit "the") and tu use subjects (doesn't matter--> it doesn't...). To finish off, go back to your sentence where you say "siempre podemos aprender algo" and check the word order: we can always learn something. One more thing: avoid reading your text. It's better to imagine that's a real phonecall....Keep on working Pili! Good job.

Elena SALVADOR good job! The beginning of your text is very good (explaining why you want to tell her about this article:) Your speech is not read aloud and that's also very positive. However, there are lots of "eeehh" that we need to change by fillers (you know, well, mmm). Check the pronunciation of "frustrated, important, injured". Remember to use subjects: "in the article says..." (who?). Keep on working like this:)

B1A Rodrigo Hi Rodrigo! It's nice to hear your message and good to see that you are mentioning some cultural information (who Rafa Nadal is). However, remember in a mediation exercise you need to tell us information from the source document (the article in this case) but not a "shopping list" or translating point by point. When I listen to your recording, there are too many long vowels (tuuuuu, eeeee). This is something we normally do when we don't have fillers (well, mmm, you know, errr). Please listen to your recording again and try to identify those items. There are some other mistakes (third singular person "sayS", for other hand --> on the other hand, don't feel, ) and avoid Spanglish words "esfort"--> effort. Hope that's useful! Keep on working:)

There are some mistakes you can avoid: temember the use of "the" (we can't say "the life", "the tennis" when we are generalizing. Also there's the use of "say" and "tell" (say something, tell somebody), third singular person "he says" and some structures: I want that you understand --> I want you to understand, for have--> to have; in something that you love it --> don't repeat the object:something that you love.

B1A FRAN Hi Fran, thanks for sharing your message. It's good as it takes the main points from the source text but you should be careful not to translate the points one by one. This is not a translation exercise but a mediation one. Remember to add cultural information: who is Rafa Nadal? You say that "you love him" but you need to tell us who he is "the famous tennis player?" for example. Then, next time, record your voice a little bit further from the micro as it was hard to listen to some parts. To finish off , let me tell you to revise the third singular person (giveS, sayS). In vocabulary, you said "we always be" but you'd rather say "we always need to be". Anyway, I feel you're working a lot! Good job:)

Additionally, you give us cultural/social information that is vital: who is he? and you mention the source (the article you read). The main problem is pronunciation: check the following words (achieve, individual, since, island, results) and some endings (helped) and stresses (interesting, relevant). Remember we say "as he says" (not "how"). But very thorough and organized. Well done!

You remembered to provide a short context at the beginning, mentioning she likes Rafa Nadal, but remember this is a mediation exercise and you could give us some more information about R.Nadal. Then, there are a few mistakes: some advice (not in plural: it's uncountable), how TO become, to be A better person. Check the pronunciation of the words "passion, health, attitude". Your English is good: you're using a wider variety of tenses (simple past, past perfect) and using new words (crane, engine). There was a tense that wasn't correct though "we don't have to stop" (didn't). Additionally, you need to check the pronunciation of the following words (engine, realized, started Easter) and I couldn't understand the last word you produced (I tried but I couldn't). I liked the use of question tags, rhethorical questions (don't you think so?) or comments (very true!). Your mediation starts with a very good introduction. However, you need to include some cultural/social information. Who is Rafa Nadal? Are we supposed to know him? Why does Kate like him? As for your English, consider the following comments: "advice" is uncountable (we can't say a few advice), "the third singular person S (this helpS, mentionS, ), some prepositions: "I thought ABOUT you", "it is always TO work", " what do you think ABOUT IT". Additionally check the pronunciation of the following words: context, effect, succeed/success, pointS, (I hardly ever listen to the ending). Good job, anyway...Carry on!

It's very well written and although at the beginning we could hear that you were reading, towards the end, you got a more natural speed.... Avoid reading. There are some things you need to correct: choosing the correct tense is still difficult for you: remember when you are telling a story, you need to use the past but then, if an action took place before that past, you need to use the past perfect: "I left the credit card" (I had left), "I didn't took" (I hadn't taken). Also, check the pronuncation of the following words "it/he", "products, got/go, fuel". Sometimes, the endings lead to misunderstandings. And last, use a "concluding/summarising" linker at the end to indicate that's the end of the story. Otherwise, it may sound quite abrupt. All in all, it's good Maria. You used new words and a wider variety of structures. Ah! by the way, we don't say "personal" but the "staff"....keep working and telling us funny anecdotes:)

Wow! What a lesson, indeed! Poor you! This happens to many foreigners...we're so different...
Your anecdote was very well told, really organised, and rich. You used a wide variety of adjectives and adverbs and several past tenses: simple past, continuous and past perfect. GOOD!!! Revise the pronunciation of the following words: birthday, abrupt, dinner, imagined, change (? I didn't really understand that word). When you used "could be in his 60s" you can say "must be/had to be"). and I think the expression you were looking for was not turned off but "turned out". Thanks for sharing:)

OMG! So many things you want them to learn! :) Thanks for sharing your opinion. It's a very natural monologue, not read, and that's very nice! I liked the way you presented the ideas. However, you need to use some cohesive devices, not just some "Ah!" you'd rather say "Ah, by the way,"...You need to work on pronunciation: "development, lawyer (you pronounced it as "liar"), procedure". Avoid repetitions: the word "important" appears several times: use crucial, vital, relevant...
In grammar, remember we can't use a future in time clauses "when they are adults" (NOT when they will be"). And the indirect questions do not accept inversion (auxiliary subject):" how a contract is".

Hi Fran, Your monologue is well organised and is very "natural".We can tell you are speaking and not reading. However, you need to improve your fluency. Remember to use fillers to avoid long vowels (mmmm, well, you know, I mean). There were some mistakes: "to know things about their bodies", "some sport as we used to have in the past" (better than just "before"), " playing in the streets" (not at), "boys and girls shouldn't be in separate classes" (better than "should separately: that's an adverb. you can't use it here). Last, avoid saying "that's all" to signal the end of your speech. I'd rather use "To conclude... or To sum up.... Thanks for sharing your opinion!

Thanks for sharing your ideas, Rodrigo. There is a wide range of expressions to show your opinion and to organise the speech. That's good:) However, there are also some mistakes you can avoid: children (no plural s), trainING the body is (the verb is here the subject), I agree/I disagree (NOT I AM AGREE/DISAGREE). Check the pronunciation of -ed endings: educated. All in all, your monologue is very well organised: coherent and cohesive. However, the intonation in the last sentence makes us think it's unfinished. Careful with that.
