I would have chosen captain William Clark because he had a lot of military experience and knew what he was doing. In the article it talks about how he started his military career at the age of 19 when he joined the Kentucky Militia. I would have also picked him because he was good with the Indians. When he was on the trip the article says that he worked will in relations with the Indians. It also says that he was prepared to work with the foreigners to get to the location.
I would have also chosen him because he was very literate. The text says that he was very good with spelling and grammar. This would have been helpful because I am not good at spelling so we could balance eachother out in that way. When traveling with someone you need to be able to balance eachother out with what you can do. For example, I am good at observing things and giving directions while it sounds like Clark would be good at making maps.

I would have chosen Pierre Dorion because he was good at interpreting. This makes sense to bring him along because you will run into a lot of different types of Indians that do not speak your language so you will need someone that can help to understand what they are saying. I know this because the text says “Pierre Dorion, a talented trapper and interpreter, was engaged by the captains as an interpreter in July 1804”. This leads me to believe that he would have brought much good to the team.
Not only could he translate but he was also very good at negotiation. He could easily calm Indian tribes down and get them to understand what he was doing. I know this because “In September 1804, when the Corps was negotiating passage into the upper Missouri with the Bois Brule Teton Sioux, Dorion’s skills would again prove valuable.” This tells us that he was very good at speaking and helping the Native Americans to understand what was happening in their land.

These bushels grow low to the ground in warm climate. Nowadays people use them for landscaping because they are very low maintenance. They can grow in a dry soil and care common in areas with little rainfall.Lots of wildlife eat these berries in their diet such as birds, bears and deer. This plant gets its name from the fact that bears absolutely love to eat them.

It has a very sturdy main stem and than branches off into small, round branches. These each have oval shaped leaves blossoms of flowers. These flowers are long and have white, oval shaped petals. Each flower usually has about four of these petals. The blooming period occurs from summer until the fall, and can last several months.

One of the animals that Lewis and Clark discovered was the black tailed prairie dog. This animal is a small rodent that is about 16 inches tall. They are furry and mostly tan with a lighter colored stomach. They also, obviously, have a black tail. These prairie dogs live in grasslands throughout the Great Plains. It was interesting when they found these animals because instead of them running they were very social. Prairie dogs are a very big community and all contribute to what they need done.
Prairie dogs eat seeds, stems, roots, grasses and leaves. They also eat insects. Since there is not a lot of water where they live they get most of their water from the plants that they eat. These animals communicate by yipping or barking. When they are in trouble they will whistle to signal the rest of their group. Lewis and Clark enjoyed this discovery because they were one of the smallest animals that they found.

The second animals that Lewis and Clark discovered was the Mountain Goat. This animal was discovered during their 11 day tredge through the Rocky Mountains. This goat lives in high up cold places. Their hooves help them to climb over the rocky terrain. These special animals have horns. They use these horns help to protect themselves. The mountain goat is very aggressive however. This was common in the animals they have found, like the black bear, because these animals were not social and very aggressive.
These goats love the cold and prefer the north-facing slopes of the mountain. Their thick, white fur helps them to stay warm and blend in with the snow. Mountain goats eat mostly low-growing shrubs, blueberries, and lichen. Since they are such powerful mammals they do not have a lot of predators except for wolves and bears. When Lewis and Clark found this animal is it most likely that it was by itself because they normal roam by themselves.

This tribe was located in North Dakota and met the explorers during their stay in Fort Mandan in November of 1805. They helped Lewis and Clark expedition by helping them to gain knowledge of the land and local tribes. Without this group Lewis and Clark would not have known what to expect on their trip.

Clark’s Hill State Historic Site is located in Osage City, Missouri. This place is marked because it was where the expedition camped. This location has not changed much due to the fact that it is now a historical site. Clark’s Hill State Historic Site’s region has many other historical parks such as Don Robinson State Park and the Sappington Cemetery. This place includes a massive hill that leads to a breathtaking view of the Missouri river and Osage river. To get to the top of this hill we can assume that the expedition would have trouble climbing up and down it if it rains because it can tend to get very slippery and steep.
