With the American people suffering and starving, the government should focus on providing their people with food and shelter. The reason for the depression was a economic downfall and in order for things to get better, the government should focus on improving our economic status. If they were to focus on art and music, that would provide no relief for suffering Americans or help the economy (trade, investment, etc) in any way.

William Arthur Cooper - Lumber Industry.

I chose this image because it reminded of that during the New Deal, F.D.R. was able to create different programs for people to have jobs and even was able to bring back and reconstruct old ones. The lumber industry being a big one. When I read about this image online it talked about the lumber industry was big in the south and was dominated by mainly African Americans rather than whites. (Search Collections) This was the big source of employment for many black southerners which is important due to the need for lumber and the black southerns finding an ability to live and work well in the south.

Citation:
"Search Collections." Lumber Industry by William Arthur Cooper / American Art.

I agree the money should have been spent on many relief efforts to help the American citizens. This is because many Americans became so poor many were sick, and homeless, and had no means of a way out. Spending money on efforts to help them would have been a good way to go about things. America did have many soup kitchens, and "Hoovervilles" aka places to stay, but it wasn't what it should have been. FDR did due a good job though at helping fund new programs to help find new jobs for millions of Americans plus help create social security. I believe that maybe that tax payer money when to art and music simply to give those people (the artists and musicians) a means for a living, which can help the economy some what, but not anywhere close to how it could've helped America if that money went elsewhere.

John Cunning: Manhattan Skyline, 1934

I chose this picture becuase it somewhat shows how some money from the New Deal was spent on infrastucture and other things of that nature. The Manhattan skyline in this art piece seems to be developed, and it shows that money was put into it. This picture shows growing infrastructure and cities, and this is what will help an economy in a time of need.

I agree that the money of the tax payers should be used for relief efforts and things that would help people in the country and things that would help flourish a hurting economy, and I also think that people should know where their tax payer money is going, BUT with that, I also believe that art is a very important aspect of life, and should be funded somehow, but the tax payers, like I said, should know where their money is going. Many often times forget that art can create jobs as well as other things can, and it is important, as is infrastructure, and other funds. Helping people in more ways than one is important.
