In regards to state legislature the textbook says, “the legislature confirms some executive appointments, has the power to impeach executive and judicial officials, and oversees the work of state executive agencies and commissions. The governor, the head of a state’s executive branch, places an important check on state legislatures’ lawmaking. In every state, the governor can veto legislation, and the legislature can override the veto if enough legislators vote to do so” (Democracy 8). It’s size varies and isn’t based off the size of the state itself. In Local Legislature the citizens have more input and opportunities for participation. The textbook says there are, “four common types of local government: counties, townships, municipalities, and special districts, plus tribal governments that enact laws for their Native American populations” (Democracy 8).

What are the characteristics of effective governors?

Governors are the head/face of their state. As for their characteristics, “In most states, a governor must be at least 30 years old, an American citizen, and a state resident for five or more years... Most governors have served in state and local government before running for governor... skilled at managing complex state governments, while others are effective at negotiating, which is essential for working closely with the state legislature. A good personal relationship with legislators may help governors achieve their goals, and being popular with voters can give the governor’s proposals extra weight” (Democracy 12).

The age requirement is usually somewhere between 18-25. The average US mayor however is 45. The book states they’re, “typically required to live for at least one year in the town or city, and if they are elected they must continue living there for the duration of their term of office” (Democracy 12).
