Dear Ms. Johnson,

Hi! My name is Julia Eilers, and I am a junior at South Campus. I took this class because I am interested in going into some type of child development field, whether it be teaching or being a child psychologist. I am on the high school swim team, and I am also on the high school ultimate frisbee team, as well as a part of student council, Ambassadors, and LINK Crew. I am also a swim instructor and swim coach at the White Bear YMCA.

One teacher who made a difference in my life was my 2nd grade teacher at Cornelia Elementary School in Edina. Her name was Mrs. Jansen, and she was the first teacher I had in Minnesota after moving back from California. All I remember is how enjoyable school was with her as my teacher, and how I always felt like I had a place in her classroom. After 2nd grade with Mrs. Jansen, it sparked my interest in working with kids and being a teacher later on in life.

I think being a good teacher means always having patience with the kids and being a good role model. Some good qualities I have in working with kids is my positive attitude, my patience, and my outgoing personality. These are important in making a good classroom environment. A weakness that I have is because of my sense of humor and personality, I am sometimes not the best at disciplining children, because I focus more on being their friend then being someone who is telling them what to do.

I am excited for this class and the opportunity I am getting. I hope to learn how to be a better leader and teacher, and become more comfortable working in a classroom setting. I am excited to help you out in your classroom and build a relationship with the kids in your classroom as well! Thank you so much for this opportunity to help me further my education.

Sincerely,

Julia Eilers

My favorite memories are how close I've gotten with the students as a whole, not one specific memories. I really like how I know all of their names and feel like I have helped all of them grow, especially when I've worked with them individually at math. It was very life changing to have children tell me that I was awesome at teaching math and they felt like they were getting better at math because of me! We had a lot of fun the last two semesters. :) :)

First semester, Julia did more "teacher helper" work for me - correcting test, putting things up in the hallway, making student portfolio holders, etc. So far spring semester, Julia has been working directly with the students. She takes a small group for reading comprehension practice each time she visits our classroom. She does a good job working with the students, and they look forward to working with her. They, typcially, complete the reading assignment that I give to her.

My professional goals are to go to school and major in elementary education with a focus in either math or elementary reading. I am going to continue going to school with a focus on getting a master's in child psychology, and once I am done with school and getting my pH.D I will either continue teaching or become a school counselor, depending on what I think then.

Aside from learning that I actually like working with kids, I learned how to be patient with children who learn in ways different than myself. Some kids took a long time understand certain things, and being patient was crucial in these situations.
