When answering questions in a science exam, it is important to interpret the question carefully. Question words are key and must always be adhered to, yet many students often overlook them and therefore answer questions incorrectly. You may know a lot of information about the subject area, but if you misinterpret the question words, your answer could be completely irrelevant and score poorly. Key words will help you to determine how to structure your answer.

Activity 1

For each of the words below, discuss how you would approach answering a question that contains that key word. The first one of each type has been done for you.

| Descriptive Question Words | How would you answer the question?
| Define | Give the precise meaning of the subject of the question
| Describe |
| Explain |
| Identify/state |
| Illustrate |
| Outline |
| Summarise |
| Compare |
| Contrast |
| Critical Question Words | How would you answer the question?
| Analyse | Break the question topic down into its fundamental parts, and critically examine each part.
