Connections to "Shared Solutions"

The "Shared Solutions" Guide discusses how to assist parents in communicating and advocating for their child.

As the quote states, the way the education system works, only some children's parents are able to advocate for them due to their class, education, and overall knowledge about schools. This should not be the case. As educators, it is our duty to assist all parents in navigating through the process of advocating for their child so all children get the services and success that they deserve.

The Guide States that as educators we must work to inform parents about board policies and procedures, teach parents about special education and legislation and should understand the school system.

This quote made me think of my class this year. This year I taught abroad at an International school. 90% of my students' parents did not speak English. This made it difficult for them to advocate for their child, not only in Special Education, but in general. They were often unable to describe what their child was struggling with due to the language barrier.

As an educator I feel as if it is my duty to help these parents, whether it be through getting a translator, explaining policies, the more knowledge the better.
