Character Analysis - Crooks by Virginia Vrentzos

Find evidence from the story to complete a character analysis of Crooks. Consider what he says, what others say about him, and his actions. You could also find outside sources, but choose wisely - no Sparknotes (they do they thinking for you), and no student-produced work (not always good evidence).

- He holds himself as someone that isn't important because of the fact of being told on numerous accounts that his opinion and actions have no meaning, he's someone that is thought to be just a worker compared to an equal or companion. "This is just a nigger talkin', an' a busted nigger. So it don't mean nothing, see?" (Steinbeck, p. 71)
- With everyone looking at him as unimportant and 'inhuman' he's discluded and separated in order to complete the disired tasks that are required of him. Coming to the point of him feeling lonesome without the support or communication of others.
'Spose you didn't have nobody. S'pose you couldn't go into the bunk house and play rummy 'cause you was black. How'd you like that? S'pose you had to sit out there and read books. Sure you could play horseshoes till it got dark, but then you got to read books. Book's ain't no good. A guy needs somebody-to be near him." He whined, "A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long he's with you I tell ya." (Steinbeck, p. 72)
