Nowadays, most people have gone to online dating.

The engagement ceremony is called a yuino, where the parents of the groom and the bride, along with the groom and the bride meet each other at a restaurant or the bride's home. Traditionally, the groom's family offers the bride's family yuinomon, or gifts that are decorated with origami turtles and cranes, which are symbols of eternity and long life. Yuinoshin is money that is offered to the bride's family. Some families follow this tradition, but others share a meal to get to know one another and decide on wedding details. If the two families live far apart, they meet the day before the wedding to have drinks and a meal together.

Women and men typically marry in their late twenties or their early thirties. Marriages are legalized once a marriage certificate to a local municipal government office. As of today, same-sex marriage is not legal, and in 2015, the Shibuya ward in Tokyo officially issued its first certificate recognizing same-sex unions, but it is not legally binding.

People eat soup from chest level, and slurp or drink the soup from the bowl directly because it isn't considered impolite.

Education is highly valued in Japan. Children in school are expected to understand the importance of education and try their hardest in school. School in Japan is year round. Almost all children go to public schools, and education stops at age 15. If parents want their child to be more educated, they must pay a fee, and pay for the child's educational needs. The school curriculum is relatively uniform across the country. Students must pass an exam to enter into a public high school. Most people continue their education after junior high to get a better chance of obtaining a job.
