Career Awareness is based on discovering the meaning of work, and learning about careers. The Career Development Checklist also includes identifying and describing jobs, naming and describing occupations, and understanding the importance of work.

As Dr. Dojonovic explained in her presentation, young adults with disabilities need exposure to careers/jobs. They also need opportunities to identify their interests, preferences, and the strengths and skills that they possess.

According to Morningstar and Clavenna-Deane, the career assessment process often increases a student's self-awareness and provides them with a better understanding of their skills.

"Systematic, age appropriate student assessment of career awareness (e.g., interest inventories, aptitude tests) has been identified as a predictor of post school employment" (National Technical Assistance Center on Transition, 2016).  

The clip below highlights the Myers Briggs Strong Interest Inventory, which is a personality assessment that compares what you're interested in to what other people who're happy in their jobs are also interested in.

Career preparation or career planning is a vital component to ensuring a positive post-secondary outcome following graduation. Career preparation should start early in the student's middle school years. Proper coursework with courses aligned to what the student wants to do after graduation must be taken when they start high school -  before the student enters 9th grade.

A robust Community Based Vocational Training program aligned with appropriate coursework at school for students with disabilities will increase the likelihood of a positive outcome for the student. Teachers must use evidence based practices included with job skill training to increase the chances of a positive experience for the student. Career preparation needs to start early and continue throughout the student's time in school.

Performance reviews about student's job performance is very important to improve and strengthen skills of a student's work ethic. CBVT skill sheets and a job review by the employer or teacher is an excellent resource. Example:
