As time pass, water flow and erode its walls. This eroded materials is made of fine silt that will build up throughout the river’s channel causing it to be silted.

In another case, the wall becomes so heavily eroded resulting it to collapse and flood the nearby area.

Firstly, to build a dam, it is a requirement to flood the area in order to store the amount of water needed to generate electricity. As a result, if it is built near developed areas like the Three Gorges Dam, they are required to move thousands of people, which costs a lot of money as it takes effort in transporting and providing distribution of food to the people as they migrate to other location. Furthermore, the government are required to pay the people for their resettlement.

Furthermore, since the aquifers hold a large amount of water, there is a high chance of an overflowing of water inside the aquifer of the dam if the flow is blocked from siltation, especially if there are higher precipitation from rainfall.
