In ancient times, health was bestowed upon individuals by divine forces and thus in order to receive healing, one had to pray or make a sacrifice to the gods. For example, the ancient Egyptians attributed headaches to the meddling of demons; the ancient Greek seeking to be healed partook in long pilgrimages, made sacrifices to the gods, and prayed in the temple of Asclepius. It is from the latter from whom we get the rod of Asclepius, the global symbol of medicine.

Harvard economist Michael Porter says people are receiving 19th century market-based delivery system with 21st century medicine. The healthcare system should change into health outcomes achieved per dollars spent. People should be able to receive good healthcare for their money.
