Why are sugar skulls part of the tradition?

Sugar art was beginning to become more known after it was brought to the new world by Italian missionaries. Mexico had many sugar mills but they did not have enough money to buy expensive decorations for their religious celebrations. So as an improvise they quickly took a hold of the sugar art tradition and began making the skull statues and put them them on the ofrendas.

How is Dia de los Muertos different from Halloween? (at least three reasons!)

Although the 2 may be compared, dia de los Muertos and Halloween have many differences. Halloween is not as family oriented as dia de los Muertos. It also isn't nearly fulled with as many traditional activities as dia de los Muertos. Last but not least although sugar skulls are a big part of the holiday unlike Halloween, the holiday also contains a lot of non-sugary, traditional foods and beverages.
