The songs of the course of years have most definitely changed over time. Not only has the purpose of songs change, but the popularity of the genre has changed as well. During the 1900s to the 1940s, the mainstream form of music was jazz. For example, the first song that I choose was about patriotism while the last one was about encouraging people to not be discouraged by their weight. Also, around this time there were a lot of references to important political events such as Spanish-American War which took place in the late 1800s and World War 2 which took place in the 1940s. By the 1950s, the mainstream music moved away from jazz and lead into different styles of rock. This lasted up until the 1970s where the genre Funk and Soul was introduced. The genre Funk Funk and Soul was best used to reflect the progress of the Civil Right Movement in which started back in the previous decade. Next was disco which best reflects the time period of the 1980s followed by Hip-Hop of the 1990s. By the 2000s, songs used a combination of different genres in which is present today.

Although genres have changed their level of popularity over the decades, the thing that remains consistent is that they are used to express thoughts and emotions. These are some of the key elements of storytelling. To add more depth to stories with songs, most of the songs have popular culture references to help people connect with the songs' meanings. In addition, song genre never died out completely as their styles are used to show common themes with songs.
