One way we can reduce runoff is by creating a specific shape in the solar panels. At the end of the lot, there will be a walkway to the entrance of the mall, and next to it is a veggie garden. The solar panels will face downwards directly into the soil. This way, the remaining rain from storms can stay off of the cars. The rain will pour into the garden and water the veggies to be pulled when finished growing and given to the restaurants.

For every 250 feet in our mall, there will be 1 parking space. Every other one will be for electric vehicles. There will be 3 bikes per store. In each row of the parking lot, there will be 409 spaces.

The lot will reduce pollution in a series of ways. One is that we will have a cleanup team at the end of every day. They will be paid to clean up and gather things like trash, litter, oil spills from cars, etc. By each row, there will be a trash can. The sides of the rows that the cans are by will switch each time. Additionally, there will be an $800 fine for litter. (We will include security cameras in each part of the lot to identify those who do so.) We will also encourage people to carpool by making parking $1.50 less/hour if there are 2 or more people in a vehicle.

As stated below, one way we will increase clean air in our parking lot is by providing hand-planted gardens. Flowers have many significant benefits to the environment and the air surrounding them. A few other things we will do is use environmentally friendly paint, non-plastic dividers, and provide a cover over the parking lot made of stone lifts and solar panels as a cover.

Our parking lot will increase beauty by having simplistic and modern coloring. The pavement in the parking lot will be black to lessen the effect of dirt and car marks. The lines between parking spaces, obviously, will be classical white. Everything will be repainted every couple to few years, depending on people’s effects on the lots. There will be thinly planted gardens in between rows of cars with flowers chosen and voted on by our first 100 customers. (Represented by the white separation lines.)

We will discourage car use by having three small parking lots around the outside of the mall. They will be a total of 63,000 square feet. They will be paid parking lots. You will only be able to walk inside the mall unless you need a wheelchair.

We will increase the use of bikes by adding biking and walking trails around outside of the mall. There will be 176,760 square feet of walking or biking trails in or around the mall. There will also be multiple bike lockers for bike storage around the mall. There will be a concierge service for delivering goods to your home if you ride a bike or walk to the mall.

We will increase people using their feet by having a lot of trails around the mall with lush low water plants and places to purchase food and drinks. The trails will connect to the local city hiking and biking trails.

We will increase the use of public transportation by making several bus stops that are close to the mall. We will offer discounts at several vendors for people who show their bus pass.

We will make the mall a fun destination with 50,000 square feet of picnic and social gathering area on the ground floor. It will include yoga classes, summer movies, kids playground, food trucks, farmers market, picnic tables, trees, and plants.

To encourage people to help the environment, our mall will have fact boards located outside of every shop. These will tell an individual a bit about that company and what they do, personally, to help our environment on a daily basis. The fact boards will include what they can do to mimic some of those practices in their own lives, at home. For example, something as simple as transferring to LED bulbs could be an easy change. When making a sustainable purchase from our mall, like the lights, they will receive a coupon at the cash register for 25% off your next purchase with us anywhere throughout the mall! (The person must tell a sales associate that they found the idea through a fact board, to receive the coupon. At the end of each fact board, there will be a code, that’s how the worker knows that the person can redeem the coupon.)

Items that impact our environment in a beneficial way will be significantly cheaper than regular items. (Most of them will be environmentally friendly.) This will encourage people to buy things that help their world, sometimes without realizing it. People often go for the cheaper option, so in our mall, the cheaper, the better.

In another attempt to discourage pollution from cars, regular parking for a car is $6/hour. Bike locks are free. The same goes for electrical car parking. It is free. This can hopefully encourage people to either bike or bring their electric vehicles, if possible. If not, they may consider carpooling to pay for fewer cars. Either way, there are fewer oil and gas fumes leaking into the air. This means less pollution.

After every 20 coupons from the mall, (meaning the person really helped the environment and read the fact boards) an individual will receive a 75% off coupon to spend anywhere in the mall. (This would be determined by how many green-tagged items there were. Green tag=enviornmentally sustainable.) Additionally, if the person purchases 3 or more things that could in some way benefit the earth, they can have a free water bottle in any color with their name engraved on it. (The water bottle would be glass and the engraving would be done by a manager.)

Besides each fact board, there will be two photos. These will all be of different parts of the Earth. One will show what an area that was poorly taken care of looks like. The other will show what that area looked like after it was properly taken care of. (Less pollution, gas leaks, litter, etc. Basically any negative human impact.) There will be short captions explaining the situation. What happened to that area of land and how we make it better. This not only shows people what’s really going on, and convinces them that they need to be more responsible with their environmental actions, too. But also that there is always hope. If we all act quickly, we can save our planet.

Source: https://earth911.com/business-policy/8-ways-your-business-can-help-save-the-environment/

One way our businesses will help the environment is by providing paper bags instead of plastic, and tags without plastic, as well. The bags will be free, and there will be no plastic option. The tags on all items will be made out of all recycled/recyclable materials. The same goes for the shelves, desks, etc. Anything that doesn’t need plastic to function, cannot have it.

For clothing-based stores, each one will have an additional team of 50. This team's job is to handmake environmentally friendly items. This way, we know what goes into creating our products and won't risk anything.

Every worker must follow the rule of recycling when possible. They will be told to limit the amount of trash they throw away on a daily basis to a minimum and that if it can be recycled, it WILL be. To help with this rule, there will be 2 recycling bins per every 3 rooms and one trash can.

We will provide each individual business with a premium glass water jug with a filter. This will be refilled in a staff bathroom by the manager of each store when needed. This will encourage clean water use and discourage plastic water bottles. In addition to that, we will not allow workers to bring in their plastic bottles to work. They must be stainless steel/metal, glass, etc.

Each individual section of the mall, no matter if it is the street lights, in the parking lot, inside stores, at restroom areas, etc. Anywhere there is light, the bulbs must be LED.

Bioswales are ditches that help contain stormwater runoff to keep the water out of clean water. It also mainly keeps the water to stay out of the oceans. We use them to help the environment stay clean. Stormwater goes into them. To build them you dig a 12-inch deep hole in the ground then run water through it two times and that’s it. They help the environment because it keeps the gross stormwater away from waterways that flow into lagoons, bays, and the ocean. We will probably need about one-fourth of an acre for all of the bioswales. Which one-fourth of an acre is not much compared to how much we have. They will be in the low points since water goes to the low points. There is already a sort of made bioswale in one of the corners of the map which creates a low point and is already existing.

This will make the water go to the low point of the trail where the bioswales are. We could also have dirt walkways so the water could sink into the dirt and pollute less. The patios will be at a small slant and the water will run down them into the bioswales. The parking lots will have trash cans so whatever people find on the ground they can throw it in the trash cans. When someone uses a trashcan to throw away refuse they will earn credits that can be used at the Foodcourt.

The food places have to use reusable utensils, plates, cups, bowls, and there will be no fridge with canned sodas because those are not reusable. When they get shipped food the packing will also have to be recycled. They could also encourage people to pick up any trash they find on the ground. The workers could also get paid extra if they pick up a certain amount of trash.

Solar panel distributors would put solar panels on top of the mall. These would give the mall lots of power and also not affect the environment. It would be expensive but it is a very nice thing to have. For the size of the mall, solar panels would help a lot and make things much simpler. We have about 300 days a year of sunshine here in Southern California so this shopping center going solar would be a great decision. If it is too difficult to put the panels on the top of the mall we could do what lots of hospitals and colleges have done and put panels in the parking lot. This is kind of a win-win because we get solar and cars get to park in the shade.

Compost sellers would help people and the environment. They would give people a place to put their extra food scraps instead of wasting them and throwing them away. The environment would be impacted too, they get food that the humans didn’t want. The people have a place to put the extra food scraps that they don’t want, then the environment gets the food. This is another win-win for humans and the environment.
