How did McKinley feel about the sinking of the USS Maine? While many may think he was like many Americans, lured in by yellow journalism. However, McKinley was fairly level headed, and did not rush to proclaim war. In fact, it is said that he "required drugs in order to sleep. He aged visibly. He paced a path through the White House grounds" during the time that it was clear war would happen

McKinley delivered a speech to the American people, addressing the USS Maine disaster. In it he said, "It is no answer to say this is all in another country, belonging to another nation, and is therefore none of our business. It is specially our duty, for it is right at our door", which contrasts many people of this time. He believed that even though it was in another country, that didn't mean that they didn't need to get involved. He also believed that " The right to intervene may be justified by the very serious injury to the commerce, trade, and business of our people and by the wanton destruction of property and devastation of the island."

A peace protocol allowed for President McKinley to pursue a treaty. As his advisers and the public found out where the Philippines were, many of them "urged the president to seize the islands as the spoils of war." McKinley did not want to give the Philippines back to the Spaniards, however he thought that if he gave them their independence, they would plunge into disarray and be invaded by another empire.

McKinley wanted desperately tried to prevent war, and he told a private secretary two years after the war, that "[D]eclaration of war against Spain was an act which has been and will always be the greatest grief of my life. I never wanted to go to war with Spain. Had I been let [alone] I could have prevented [it]. All I wanted was more time." He believes that had he been given more time by Congress, he could've managed to procure a peace deal for Cuba and Spain.

Urged by his advisers, McKinley demanded to receive the Philippines, and Spain gave the US Guam, and Puerto Rico. Spain also gave Cuba its much wanted independence, which was the reason for the entire war. Many of these countries did not want to be handed over to the US because they believed it was like trading one imperial owner for another. The Filipino people fought for independence for many years, eventually being crushed by the US military.

What did the people of the United States think about the explosion of the USS Maine? How did they feel about the war? A magazine article written in 1898 should help us get an idea. The article states that "it is not true that battleships are in the habit of blowing themselves up," giving the sense that the fact that the battleship just blew up randomly, was not possible. The article continues to push readers into the mindset that this was no ordinary explosion, and it was in fact caused by an enemy. They also attempt to pit Americans against the Spanish, writing "the feeling has been, therefore, that Spain's real enemies were the Americans, and that the open outbreak of hostilities was simply a matter of the convenient time and season, to be determined by exigencies in Spain."
