To become a veterinarian, you'll need to complete several years of education and training. You'll need to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and obtain a license. Many DVM graduates also choose to continue their training through internships and residency programs.
Earning a bachelor's degree can improve your chances of gaining admittance to veterinary college; however, some veterinary schools admit applicants who have a certain number of undergraduate credits, rather than a bachelor's degree. Commonly required courses include animal biology, microbiology, animal nutrition, zoology, and systemic physiology.
Entrance into veterinary college is highly competitive. In addition to high grades and letters of recommendation, prior experience working with veterinarians or scientists could give you an advantage over other applicants. Depending on the school, you must also gain an acceptable score on the Medical College Admission Test, Veterinary College Admission Test, or Graduate Record Examination.

How is math involved

Veterinarians receive an education that is heavily focused on science and math to practice their trade. Whether they decide to treat only dogs and cats or less common pets such as guinea pigs and birds, they need to know how to use math to properly calculate billing charges, medication doses and surgical procedures to preserve the health of their patients.

Running the Business

A veterinary practice is a business that encounters the same challenges that most operations do, such as how to turn a profit by keeping expenses lower than income received. Private practice veterinarians are even more in tune with what it takes to run their business smoothly and make sure the necessary inventory is also in stock. In this environment the veterinarian uses mathematics when ordering supplies, determining the cost of all services and paying employees, to name a few operational requirements.

Dosing Medications

Veterinary students often work as veterinary technicians or attend preveterinary programs that include classes in chemistry, biology, physical sciences and math, and learning math conversions is part of the training. When administering medication to a sick pet the veterinarian must use math to calculate the proper dose based on the animal's size, weight and species. According to digital library Wisc-Online, veterinary technicians are schooled on three systems of measurement -- metric, apothecary and household. Some of the conversions based on these measurements are ounces to pounds, millimeters to meters and milligrams to grams.

Performing Surgery

Veterinarians need to make critical mathematical calculations when preparing to operate on an animal, a task that becomes even more challenging the smaller the pet. For example, cutting a pet mouse in the wrong place while attempting to remove a skin cancer growth could result in the severing of an artery or nerve that could render the pet lame. Determining the specific amount of anesthesia that is both necessary and safe for a pet undergoing surgery also requires mathematical calculations.

Food Safety

Veterinarians that have decided to steer their career toward the food safety niche are responsible for inspecting livestock to detect any traces of transmissible diseases. According to the Career Cornerstone Center, an online resource for individuals exploring specific career paths, these veterinarians must make sure government regulations are being adhered to and that animals with questionable health are quarantined for a specific amount of time. Mathematical calculations help with these life-threatening decisions.
