Before one can teach, a teacher needs to build relationships. No one really knows what a child goes home too but a teacher with enough insight can watch for cues or triggers that can affect a child. I teach meditation in my class to reset and calm before we move on. I find it helps us to stay focus. Some teachers use props in their rooms to calm a child down ie stuffed animals. First and foremost it is building that relationship so the child can succeed academically.

Teachers need to realize that students, especially many of our students, experience these kinds of trauma. As a child who is still learning social skills and self-regulation, if this trauma goes untreated it has a negative effect. Children need help to regulate their action and feelings. We, as teachers can help them do this.
