Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Juliette Ferrars is a 17 year old girl who is placed in an asylum for 264 days after she accidentally killed a child because her touch is deadly. One day a man in thrown in her cell and soon she learns it is her childhood friend Adam. One day they are ripped from the cell and brought in front of the leader of the Reestablishment, Aaron Warner, who says he wants to use Juliette as a weapon in his war. Juliette soon learns Adam was sent to her cell to spy on her and bring the information back to Warner. Throughout the novel she grapples with what she should do, fight against Warner or for him as the monster he (and herself) believe her to be. One of the central themes of this novel is the loss of innocence. Juliette is only 17 and she was thrown away by her family for her gift and left to fight for her own life in the asylum and against Warner. She sees and experiences all of these evil things that slowly chip away at her innocence. She doesn't get the chance to be a child or live her childhood fully. She is ripped from that innocent part of life and thrown into a world having to fight everyday just to survive.

The Hunger Games by Sueanne Collins

In what was once North America the capital of Panem is divided into 12 districts. Each year these districts pick two children/teens to go into a fight to the death called "The Hunger Games". When Katniss's sister is chosen she volunteers to take her place along side her childhood acquaintance Peta. Together they have to figure out how they will make it through this years games. This novel shows loss of innocence because Katniss is only 16 when she has to go through the games and witness and participate in the killing of other children. Even before this though she has witnessed and lived through what the capital has done to her district, district 12. Going through all of this has taken away any sense of childhood innocence she could have had and replaced it with having to fight for basic survival.

This poem represents loss of innocence because it is talking about a tree having once been so sweet and having fruit, but after something happens it poisons the tree and the fruit to no longer have it's sweetness. This is similar to how in the novel she was a sweet and innocent child until one day something happens to her and she looses that innocence and the ability to be what she once was.

A Court of Thorns And Roses by Sarah J. Maas

In this Novel Feyre Archeron is a 17 year old girl who is trying to take care of her poor and starving family. When she goes into the woods one day and kills a wolf she is kidnapped by a fairy high lord for killing one of his men. She is forced to stay with the high lord forever or give her life for the one she took. She chooses to stay his prisoner and eventually learns she may be the key to a dark curse put on the fairy land. This novel shows loss of innocence because we see Feyre struggle to take care and keep her whole family alive at only 17 and then go one to be captured and become a forced prisoner. She has no ability to keep her childhood innocence through any of it and instead is forced to grow up in order to survive all she has gone through. We even get flashbacks to her life as a child where she was able to have some innocence before anything happen and we see it get stripped away by everything she has gone through that has hardened her into who she is at only 17.

This video is a great discussion about the loss of innocence. He talks about how we come into the world innocent and untainted, protected by our parents until one day something happens that takes that away, some great evil that rips the innocence from us. This is exactly what happens in the novel Shatter Me. She is born innocent until one day when people realize what she is and abandon her and she losses that innocence and become hardened to survive.

The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas

In this novel we follows Starr, a 16 year old girl who lives a great and normal life. One day after a party she witnesses a horrible act of police brutality, her childhood best friend Khalil being shot after being pulled over. following this Starr's life does a 180 as she must choose between her life in the hood she calls home where people are fighting for justice for Khalil or her life at her prep school where people are calling what happened to Kahlil justified because he must have done something wrong. This book is a great example of the loss of innocence is a non fantasy setting. This is set tin real life and is something thousands of teens like Starr go through. She witnesses a horrible and brutal act right in front of her and it throws her into a world she is not prepared for. She is forced out of her childhood innocence with this one moment and is forced to grow up quickly in order to survive it.

Overall, one of the main themes in Shatter Me is the loss of innocence. We can see through the quotes that Juliette has gone through something that has fundamentally changed her, and her innocence, all of the death and trauma she and others have gone through has taken it away from her. It is easy to see how a loss of innocence is a common theme in many novels portraying teenage characters like The Hunger Games, The Hate You Give, and A court of Thorns and Roses. This is because the loss of innocence is something extremely common and is a fundamental part of growing up. Whether it happens from just aging normally and growing up to see the world for what it is, or it comes from something happening to you like the poem and video discuss. Overall, it is a normal thing that happens as we grow up and thus it is a common thing portrayed when using teenage characters.
