1) "Students learn best when what they are learning has importance in their lives"

This idea is extremely important to me as an educator. One of my core tenets of being a teacher is making my lessons applicable to my students. When I was in high school, I was always the kid who asked "When will we use this in real life". If the answer were "never", I would get distracted and become uncaring about the lesson. Because I have lived this, I want to do things differently when I have a classroom. This applies to the idea of critical literacy because students will be more thoughtful and engaged in my lessons because they can see real-world applications.

2) This factors into my teaching in multiple ways. The most important one is adding connections to modern events in my social studies class will be a frequent part of my curriculum. These connections are vital to understanding history and how it is important to our own lives

1) "You treat them like a man out there, he's responsible like a man out there then he comes to school and it is different."

I think that this is a very important topic for us as teachers to tackle. Not every student is at the same maturity or responsibility level. Some students have much that is expected of them on a day-to-day basis, such as the student that is being talked about in the quote. Every student is different and comes in with different expectations and life experiences, and we as teachers need to understand and provide for that. A one-size-fits-all or blanket way of treating and handling students does not work.

2) I will implement this in my classroom by being mindful of these differences. I will be compassionate and understanding toward all students, regardless of their backgrounds. I believe that this is the best way to accommodate ALL students in my future classroom.

1) "Depicting Adolescence biologically and psychologically, and rejecting or diminishing the role of social context, this cover story echoes a familiar, dominant view of youth: nature governs adolescence, leaving little room for natures variations"

We need to consider all aspects of students lives when we are working with them. Taking a belief that students are the way they are just because of nature is an incomplete picture of what makes up a student. This article exhibits CL because it focuses on a key aspect of this idea which is examining how literature depicts certain social groups. It also focuses on how we as educators look at certain students

This article factors into my teaching because it adresses something I am not well versed in. I grew up in a community without much diversity in just about any area, leading me to possibly have certain biases and or opinions that are not opinions that will help my students. Being able to identify these within my self is necessary to being able to identify this within the texts that I must read with my class.

1) “facets of the cultural values and beliefs, social institutions and forms, roles and personalities, history and ecology of a community may have to be examined in their bearing on communicative events and patterns”

This quote is saying that communication is shaped by a community's culture, history, and environment, and understanding these factors helps explain why people communicate the way they do. This is important and connects to CL because it allows me to build a more inclusive classroom, and by extension building better relationships with my students.

This ideal can help build empathy within myself and my curriculum. This could also lead to making my instruction different so that all students get something out of it, not just a paticular group
