This lesson is designed for a 7th grade language arts class. The students will be assessed on chapters 1-11 of the novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, by completing a TIC-TAC-TOE assignment incorporating major concepts covered in the novel.

The instruction / modeling portion of this lesson, with the PowerPoint, I will explain the directions for the assignments. I will guide the students through these directions using probing questions. Next, the students will receive a notes page printout for the PowerPoint and will write down, draw, or highlight anything that pertains to the directions and their own ideas. Upon completion of the PowerPoint, the students will highlight the proper boxes to create their own Tic-Tac-Toe. (Appendix B) When the students are finished, they will find a partner with a matching board and brainstorm ideas for the completion of the assignment. Upon completion, the students will to their seats and together we shared the various ideas generated.

Finally, in the independent application activity, the students will be completing the Tic-Tac-Toe assignments. Materials were passed out and the students were given Google Chromebooks to begin. The students were also given a daily inventory/ self-assessment sheet. The self-assessment will be used to guide my instruction throughout the next few lessons in which we will be working on the assignment (Appendix D). This sheet will also help me to assess the students’ needs for the project.

The students will be assessed on the same goals. Differentiation is built within the Tic-Tac-Toe board as it serves as a menu for the student to choose the appropriate assignment based on their interests and level. The writing assignments would be targeting the more advanced where the drawing assignments would be more basic.
