Carol Ann Duffy was born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 23, 1955, her parents being Mary Black and Frank Duffy. She was raised in Staffordshire in England, along with four younger brothers. Her father worked as a fitter for an electric company. She received a philosophy degree in 1977 from Liverpool University. She began most of her work writing for television, as well as working in East End London schools as a writer in residence. She had also edited numerous anthologies, children's books, plays, and even worked within the musical industry.
