In the book Tris is told she is divergent and she is told not to tell anyone about it. During the book she is told by people how people have died because it was found out they were divergent. To be divergent is to be different and can put you in danger because non divergent people are afraid of divergent people and it causes tension between them and leaders of the different sectors are afraid of them.

In the beginning of the book she is making the decision to either stay with her family in Abnegation or go to Dauntless during which she says ¨ I am brave, I am selfish,¨ (Ruth 47) she then decides to go into Dauntless abandoning her family which is considered selfish and Dauntless is for the brave which is where she chose to go.
