Digital storytelling workshops typically begin with a story circle, creating a trusting atmosphere and getting to know each other through activities. Story prompts are given eliciting concentrated thoughts as to the most powerful elements to be developed from a lifetime of memories. Storytelling exercises introduce method and encourage the sharing of material. Participants are then introduced to the principles of narrative: narrator, voice, background. Short scripts are written, following which the voiceovers are recorded. Participants scan photographs from albums or take new photos of people and objects. Others make images through drawing, make simple stop frame animations or computer software animations such as Adobe Flash

The facilitator draws a problem tree on a whiteboard / flip chart etc.
Somebody poses a problem to the group and asks people to consider barriers in relation to that problem. E.g. ‘What are the barriers to effective communication between patients and health professionals?’
Each person considers the barriers and writes them on post it notes (one barrier per post it). This is done individually.
The facilitator then asks each person to stick their post it note on the appropriate section of the problem tree, and say why they think it belongs there.
Each part of the tree represents something different. The roots represent individual / personal barriers, the trunk is institutional barriers (e.g. problems within an individual GP practice) and the branches are wider political barriers (e.g. NHS / government policy).
The facilitator and the group can challenge why people choose to put things on different parts of the tree, and ask people to think about the interplay between the different levels.
Once people have added their barriers, you can move on to considering solutions together. These are added to the tree as apples or leaves.

As the title suggests this activity is simply asking the question — “if you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?”

Now there are three variations on how to facilitate this one virtually.

The first is if you have a virtual whiteboard tool like Miro available or even office 365 PowerPoint where you can all edit at the same time. Use it to put an image of the world in the centre and get each person to put their name on the part of the world that they would rather be — it can be great fun to visualise!

The team doing it in Miro

Another option is to have someone compile the list of places into Google Maps using the ‘Saved Places’ feature — here’s a comprehensive how-to guide for using the feature.

Each person takes turns to give everyone a quick tour of their immediate surroundings — i.e. walk everyone through the room you are in, what’s on your desk, etc.

This is a fun way to get to know each other a bit deeper and to feel more physically connected even though you’re remote.

Being able to see each other’s space a bit more before starting is a great way to feel more connected and like you are sitting in the room with them, even though you may be halfway across the world form one another.

Set a time limit if you need to — 60 seconds per person — pro-tip if you are doing this with a large group a timer and time limit is a must to keep things short and sharp.
