The lizard and Okonkwo share many similar qualities. Like the lizard, Okonkwo has no difficulty expressing his self-importance to the people of Umuofia. Although Okonkwo seems courageous and unafraid externally, he battles his own fears of failure internally. Throughout the book, Okonkwo constantly feels the need to display his prominence, and as the book continues, he is led to his own death because of it.

"Okonkwo's fear was greater than these. It was not external but lay deep within himself. It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father" (13). This quote from Things Fall Apart demonstrates Okonkwo's internal fear of an unsuccessful life, and that he will rise above weakness and defeat. Growing up, Okonkwo's father, Unoka, was cowardly and afraid, which made Okonkwo feel the need to manifest his strength and power for everyone to see. The hopelessness Okonkwo feels when his tribe falls to the Christians is unstoppable. Once Okonkwo realized that things truly were falling apart, he stopped trying, and ended his life.

In today's society, most of us are competitive and strive for greatness. Like the lizard, if we don't receive recognition for our own actions, we will likely commend ourselves. Pride and self-esteem are relevant to our own world, whether it be external or internal.
