According to Greek mythology, Etna was a giant and one of the Zeus' brothers. Envious of his brother's power, he decided to defeat the king of the gods, building the highest mountain to reach Olympus and take his brother's place. The powerful Zeus, however, did not tolerate the act of rebellion, and as a punishment he hurled a bolt of lightning against the construction of Encedalus, causing its destruction and the burial of the giant under his own construction; as a result, the debris buried the giant. Encedalus remained imprisoned, unable to move under the weight of the rocks and stones. Only his violent incandescent breath came out of the mound, in the form of what we call lava. Until today, according to legend, Encedalus lives under the volcano; its sudden bursts and impulses of anger would correspond to the eruptions and earthquakes of Etna.
