It felt necessary to take a step back and realize what was actually happening over in the Middle East during Marjane's time growing up there. The only reason why it isn't a 5 out of 5, is purely because some of the messages weren't exactly clear cut, as well as some panels showing less effort when compared to others.

Pg. 140, Panel 3

Rating: 4

I thought that this graphic novel was quite interesting. The illustration helped me understand a lot of what was going on, and it helped with putting me into the head of Marji and being able to understand what she was going through. I think that her development as the revolution went on was incredible and also very sad as no child should have to live through that. I am glad she was able to come out on top of such a horrible situation. The only reason I gave it a 4, not a 5, is because I could not fully relate to the characters and what they were going through. I feel like this would have been a lot more meaningful if I had.

However, this is simply not a book that I would read purely for enjoyment, partially due to the very negative themes, and partially due to the difficulty for me to really connect with the characters. It was still a good read though, and I would recommend it to others.

I have never read or seen a comic without color that depicts a very hard time for people. Prior to reading this I had no understanding of the Iranian Revolution. Although this was a good book based on personal accounts, I don't think it described the situation in Tehran on a personal level.

I loved how simple the art style was yet how it communicated so much through graphic devices, especially when dealing with heavy subject matter. The characters were shown through many different angles and I felt like I understood all of them, especially Marji. The storytelling mixed with the advancement of Marji as a character and as a person was incredible and impactful. It also provided a great look into this part of history and how people suffered from it and made me think on the privileges I’ve received from living in the United States during this time in history.

I enjoyed reading this book much more the other school assigned books. the character were much more engaging because they are real people and written as such. being a graphic memoir makes it much easier to follow.
