What We Learned About Boarding Our Horse

It has been a lesson learned that choosing a barn to board our horses can be frustrating and, sometimes, morally injurious to our identities.

I recently posed the question to my veteran, "In business, the code of ethics addresses the subject of our individual identities. How many boarding facilities had a code of ethics published that addressed more than the interest of the horse? There have been several issues that arose that could be interpreted as discrimination, regardless of the identities of the owners."

There were "barn rules" posted. However, I have never noticed the equine best practice code of ethics posted at a facility. It was when differences of opinions and crowd sentiments escalated where new rules would be implemented.

Isn't a boarding facility a business? This is what I've learned.

♦ Notice if there is a propensity to use boarders in exchange for boarding fees. Is there a clear process in place for this exchange to be tracked on the books for tax purposes?
♦ How frequently does the facility go through hired help?
♦ How many horses died from colic around the time hired hands were changed?
♦ Is the facility in the process of being foreclosed on? If so, what are the contract agreements and what risks are involved?
♦ If your horse is declared as a problem horse, will there be a plan provided to help you determine whether you can meet their requirements and demands of herd integration for pasture time?
♦ Who gets pasture time? Is it only full care boarders that get pasture time and how large of a pasture is it? How many horses will be in the pasture and is there quality forage for the horse?
♦ If your horse has PSSM--will your needs for a dry lot be met? How will your horse be able to stretch their legs so their bones can have the optimal environment for their physical and emotional health?
♦ If only full-care boarders get pasture time, what provisions does the facility have to accommodate self-care or partial care customers?
♦ If cultural challenges arise (and they will because everyone has an opinion), how will the facility guarantee that they will address the differences in opinions in a fair and just manner and without prejudice?

These are all frustrating questions for a facility. Conversely, it is the cost of doing business. Business is messy because business involves people. Without a code of ethics, it can make the messiness chaotic.

"But when we shut down our friends, mocking their shortcomings instead of appreciating their willingness to ask questions and grow as equestrians, we stop the cycle of education within our community and we put the very horses we love so much at risk."

There has not been a shortage of experience with equestrians that lack emotional intelligence and awareness of how their attitudes impact the view that equine desirables will have on the horse community.

There has been a lot of egos, pride, condescension, and snobbiness experienced in the community. In contrast, there have been some very wonderful people that we met as well.

From the sentiment of my veteran, the tone that has been experienced is enough for him to question whether he wants anything to do with the community which is a disservice to my effort to utilize equine-assisted therapy. It is also not going to be a favorable review with other veterans who are considering the same.

"I don't care what people think. I can't help it if they're stupid." These types of comments are not conducive to people that are trying to learn. Fortunately, we did find a couple of very helpful, experienced, and somewhat emotionally intelligent equestrians willing to help us learn.

For those who are just starting--choose who you surround yourself with carefully. If someone's ego and pride are more important than your learning process--find someone else. If you are afraid, worried about being judged, or addressed in an unprofessional and unbecoming manner that does not help you and your horse grow together--get a different mentor that will treat you better. They can be hard to find but they are out there.

You and your horse deserve the most ideal environment to encourage an upward trend in your training. What's the point of staying with someone that you cannot trust to be emotionally aware?

Horses, after all, are emotional creatures and if you are on the path of emotional rehabilitation--this journey is too important for you to not find a mentor that will help you with what you need.

How we say what we say makes a difference and a condescending trainer or mentor could put your safety at risk regardless of how they may justify treating you rudely as being concerned about your safety.

Gaslighting and emotional blackmail is not a mentally safe place for emotional rehabilitation. It is not okay and it's best to avoid people like that for now.
