Instead of assuming that they understand how to organize, or how to stay on task, or are even able to initiate a task, I need to provide a scaffolding around them to act as a sort of external frontal lobe so that they are able to achieve better success in these areas--and they more they are successful in small ways involving these skills, the more likely the skills will transfer over time to other situations.]]> 2018-10-16 13:58:33 UTC https://padlet.com/knahnsen/2x8kgmvwe88p/wish/293340452 Executive functioning and self regulation skills help kids with essential skills that they need for life. They are not born with these skills; they need to be taught and practiced. Some kids think what we teach them is stupid and they see the need for it. They have said, "this isn't helping me with my anger" or "I don't need to learn how to breathe". Being able to provide them strategies that can work in the resource room does not always mean they will work in the regular classroom because the routines and expectations may be different for that teacher.
