In the novel Girl In Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow, we follow the life of Charlie Davis also known as "Silent Sue". At the beginning of the novel, we find out that Charlie is in a mental institute named Creeley. That is where we meet all the other girls at the institute one of them being Blue, the girl who named Charlie, "Silent Sue". During the course of the book, we find out little snip bits of Charlie's past. About her past friends Ellis, Mikey, Evan, and Dump. When she mentions Evan and Dump, Charlie mentions a place called the Seed House. It is assumed that you cannot live there for free so in order to stay the owner, Frank makes the girls get raped constantly. I assume that Charlie tried to commit suicide in that house because she talks about Evan and Dump finding her unconscious with blood all over her, most likely from her cutting. So, Charlie tried to commit suicide and that is how she ended up at Creeley. While at Creeley, Charlie was covered in bandages so her scars could heal, during the time she still had her bandages she would not talk. After she got her bandages removed. She began to talk again and she has progressed more mentally. Although she still has many thoughts about self-harming herself. The last part I left off on, she was doing school work, and her teacher left so she messaged an old friend.

In the novel Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow, we learn about the day-to-day life of Charlie Davis and all the ups and downs she goes through. The last time I wrote a summary Charlie Davis was still in Creeley. Charlie got discharged and she was supposed to live with her mom but her mom told her she had to go to Arizona because Mikey is there and he could help her. Mikey is Charlie's old friend who moved to Arizona for college. After a couple of weeks in Arizona, Charlie got a job washing dishes at a cafe named True Grit. While working at True Grit she met this guy who was the brother of the owner Julie. His name was Riley and he was in his 30s. Charlie found out he had a girlfriend named Bunny and flipped out and they had a fight but they cleared it up a couple of days after. Mikey left to travel with a band a couple of weeks after he returned and met up with Charlie. While working Riley would ask Charlie to get some drugs for him and she would do it. They eventually got into a sexual relationship. Julie, Riley's sister finds out about their relationship and switches their job schedules so they won't interact at work because she doesn't like that they are dating in the first place. After all that, Charlie finds out that Mikey has married Bunny while on the road with the band. She doesn't know how to feel but she doesn't have any time to process it because Blue tells her she is going to Arizona. Blue is a woman who Charlie met at Creeley. In the last bit I read, Charlie brought Blue to her apartment.

Throughout the entire book, Charlie is in conflict with herself. Whenever something that she considers bad she has to suppress the urge to cut herself and she ends up drinking instead. She has this internal conflict with herself where she seems to hate everything about herself and she blames herself whenever something bad happens to those close to her. One conflict she has had with another person is Mikey and the girlfriend situation. Charlie has always had a crush on Mikey and when she found out Mikey had a girlfriend she was crushed. On the night she found out Mikey and she were at a party and so she got drunk. Mikey had to chase her down and Charlie confessed everything and Mikey was just shocked. Charlie kissed Mikey but he pushed her away because he had a girlfriend. Charlie got angry and ignored Mikey for a while. They eventually made up but she still had feelings for Mikey. Another conflict is with Julie, she is Riley's older sister. Julie is the owner of True Grit, the place that Charlie works at. Charlie has scars on her arms from cutting and she would always wear long-sleeved shirts. One day she wore a short sleeve to work and Julie got angry at her and told her to always wear long sleeves because people at the cafe "also need to heal". Charlie felt so bad about herself even before Julie said anything about her scars and Julie saying that made her feel even worse. Ever since then their relationship has been weird and Charlie doesn't feel comfortable around her anymore.

A lot has happened since I first started reading the Girl In Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow. When we first started reading the novel we knew that “Silent Sue” (Charlie Davis) was committed to a mental institution called Creeley because she attempted to commit suicide. We also knew that she had been through a traumatic experience living under Frank's so-called “care”. In which she had the constant reminder that she would only have a roof over her head if she complied to Frank’s diabolical plan to manipulate young girls to prostituting themselves for shelter. From the multiple chapters I have read Charlie Davis has been released from Creeley since she has”shown signs of improvement” this is true to a certain extent she still had the constant urge to cut. The main reason she was released was the fact that her insurance couldn’t cover her stay anymore. Since she’s a minor, Charlie is discharged to the hands/care of her mother. But to her surprise her mother greets her with her birth certificate and other identifying papers along with a bus ticket to Tucson, Arizona. Where Mikey ( her friend) would open her with open arms and care for her. Mikey is someone she adores whom she imagines spending her life with. She was first introduced to Mikey by her friend Elis who died from severe cutting which led to her being brain dead. Charlie arrives at her new life in Tucson. She arrived at Mikey’s apartment and there wasn’t anyone home. Mikey wouldn’t come home for many days since he was on a tour. Charlie spent weeks in Mikey’s apartment and hiding from the “real world” she was afraid of facing. Until she is confronted by a laid lady telling her she needs to get a job to pay rent. Charlie took her advice and got herself a gig as dishwasher at a cafe called True Grit. As she works there we are introduced to new characters Julie the owner of the Grit and Riley the brother of Julie’s who is a “failed” musician and now working in the Grit as the cook. Riley has his own share of problems; he is an alcoholic and drug addict. As days go by Charlie feels her life is becoming sort of normal in comparison to what her life was before. One day Mikey returns and they catch up. Charlie finally had the courage to kiss Mikey at a party in which she was intoxicated. She was faced with a slap of utter rejection. Mikey admitted he had a girlfriend who later became his wife named Bunn. With the feeling of rejection she begins to distance herself from Mikey and becomes closer to Riley. She believes that he would understand her the best because of what he is also going through a lot. Their connection depends to the point where they begin to get intimate with one another . Even in the workspace it was obvious they had something going on. Julie notices their connection and has the idea to switch their schedule around so that they wouldn’t be able to interact with one another and stop the relationship that was forming between them. Charlie's life has many obstacles. And now I’m being reintroduced to her friend Blue from Creeley institution who is reappearing in her life in which she would move in with her. The Question is what will unfold next?

Conflicts that appear in the novel:

Human VS. Self - From the very beginning of the novel Charlie is in the constant battle of not causing herself physical/ mental harm and trying to overcome her trauma’s she has experienced. She also blames herself for Eli's death since she told elis that cutting relieves pain . Adding to her list of struggles she begins to have drinking problems and tries to justify it by saying that it’s better than cutting herself.

Human VS Human- In the beginning we know that she had had multiple conflicts with an abusive mother especially after her father had committed sucide.Frank and his house of prosituttion. The girls that would call her silent sue in Creely. MIkey and his rejustion towards her and the realization that he is off the market .. Julie and her neglect towards the relationship between Riley and Charlie. Also, Julie not wanting Charlie to wear short sleeve shirts because it showed her scars.

Human VS Society- When Charlie was job hunting before landing her gig at True Grit she was denied the job at a dinner because of her appearance. Also, going back to Julie’s encouraging Charlie to wear long sleeves in order to cover her scars she stated that “other people are healing too”. She demishes Charlie’s confidence and makes her feel small/ insecure. Note it was Charlie’s first time being comfortable wearing a short sleeve shirt she would always cover her scars. It also could be interpreted to customers True Grit supports self harm which would be bad for business.

Since the last book meeting, Blue has met Riley and it is not going good for Charlie. When Blue first met Riley it was after Charlies night shift at True Grit. Blue and Riley got along really well right away and that caused Charlie to get jealous. She was thinking about how her and Riley weren't as close as Blue and Riley when they first met. After that interaction, Charlie went to work on the next day and when she went back to her apartment she did not see Blue there. So she went to Riley's place and found Blue there talking with Riley. Even though Blue told Charlie that even if she flirts with Riley its just for the attention and she would never try to get with him so Charlie shouldn't worry. Charlie still worries but she pretends to worry less because Blue seems happy. I left off on a section where Charlie started to argue with Riley about how he doesn't care about her and he only cares about what she can do for him.

One way that Charlie contradicts herself in the story is when she is going to find Blue at Riley's place and she see's them being really close and she says that she isn't jealous. She comments," He's drawling jokes, she's laughing, her face flushed in the universe of his attention. Just seeing his hands on hers hurts. I know she said she'd never do anything with him, but still. And then I feel shitty, because didn't Blue say she was lonely? And here she is, having a good time, with someone paying attention to her." Charlie is contradicting herself by at first saying that she is feeling what I assume to be jealousy and then after she says that she felt shitty about it. Later she also says that she's happy that Blue is getting along with someone although what she feels is probably jealousy and she would be happy if who Blue got along with someone other than Riley.

In the newer character I’ve read, Blue has finally made her grand debut into Charlie’s life. With her appearance we can assume new plots will emerge with her stay. From the moment Charlie met with Blue, Blue is very bold/forward she speaks her mind and isn’t afraid of doing it . She is so quickly to comment that Charlie does not own a car (once again BOLD MOVE). As she begins settle in to her new life with Charlie. She was introduced to Riley and they instantly clicked. With this new connection started forming Charlie begins to feel ounces of jealously. She get jealous of how out going Blue is ( sharing a cigarette with Riley something that she and Riley haven’t done) also the how Riley is fully engage/ intrigue in his conversation with Blue. Not really being aware of her presence which is causing her to feel that she is replaceable / insecure in general . She becomes more concerned the next day when she finds Blue in Riley’s place having another full conversation without her. Blue tries to confront Charlie by telling her that she would never be with him. But if Charlie were to ever see her flirting with Riley it's because she likes the feeling of being notice (attention or gratification that Riley is giving her). Since I had to stop reading due to my book club scheduled I ended off where Charlie confronts Riley about her feelings and how She feels about her situation-ship she has with him.

Charlie contradicts herself by saying that “she wants to get better” but she continues to have constant thoughts of causing herself harm. Not only that but she still has her cutting kit if she truly wanted to “get better” that kit should’ve been way gone unless the author is foreshadowing and Charlie falls back into her old habits . Lastly, instead of getting better she falling into newer habits whether it be alcohol or obtaining drugs for Riley. Overall she not getting better. She’s being manipulated into enabling all of Riley's additions (Drug & alcohol) as well as her consist battle of her conciseness thoughts.

R.V Summary/Song - 3/4/22

So far, Riley and Charlie have had a fight and it was really bad so they hadn't talked for a while. On the day of Charlie's art exhibition, she couldn't find Blue and so she went to Riley's place to look for her. She found her there but Blue was high on drugs again. Blue was on drugs again because someone in Creeley called her and told her Louisa, a girl from the center had set herself on fire. While all that was happening, Riley was hooking up with his drug dealer Wendy and Charlie caught them. Charlie was very sad and frustrated while Riley got angry at her and told her to leave. She ended up staying in a dark alley by herself for a couple of hours. When she went back to her apartment she found it trashed, everything was destroyed. She found out that Wendy had followed Blue back to their apartment and beat her up and trashed the apartment. Charlie was so tired that she sort of attempted to kill herself, she stepped on glass that she broke. Her neighbors and coworkers found her on the floor of her apartment and helped her with her glass wounds. She then went to Sante Fe with Tanner and Linus, her coworkers that found her and they went to their grandfather's house. Charlie healed there and then she went back to Arizona. She went back to her apartment and Blue was there she was determined to get better and they seemed to have a stronger bond. Charlie went back to work and found out that Riley got into an accident and stole a car and money from True Grit. He was sent to a rehab center to get better. Charlie found the number to the rehab center and called for closure but she ended up feeling bad. After a while, Charlie gets a call from Linus's Grandfather, Felix, and he offers her a job which Charlie accepts. Right after that Julie, Riley's sister, tells Charlie that Riley is going to perform at a concert for his friend that passed away and that she should come and Riley wants her to come. At first, Charlie denied it because she did not want to see him at all but she accepted in the end. That is where I left off.

Song (Eric by Mitski) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRPI6JSCOK0
Song Lyrics - https://genius.com/Mitski-eric-lyrics

In the scene (pg. 327-329) that I chose from the novel Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow, Charlie is at Riley's house and they are both drunk. Blue is also there and she tells Charlie that they should live together and Charlie agrees. Blue passes out after a while and Riley tells her that he thinks that them living together wouldn't be a good idea. Charlie gets angry at him and starts asking him why he won't let her have one friend. Riley gets defensive and says that he didn't mean it like that. Charlie gets even angrier and starts bashing Riley and how it's so hard to be around him when he's so "fucked up". Charlie then starts telling him that he never asks her about her past and why she has the scars she has or why she was at Creeley. She tells him that she thinks he only treats her as "a book on a shelf", only there when he needs her to be there. She starts telling him about her past in an angry manner while he just stays quiet. She starts telling him that he'll only give her things because she seems like a sad girl and she'll let him do anything for those things because she seems naive and small. After Charlie tells him about the attempted rape that happened to her and how she lived in a sex house, she references Riley's drug abuse and she begs him to stop because she doesn't want anything bad to happen to him because she's attached to him now.

In the song "Eric" by Mitski, she talks about a bad relationship with a guy. Their relationship is purely sexual with no feelings involved. The guy treats her so badly and hurts her. Although, she lets him treat her like that because she wants their relationship to work and she wants him to love her how she loves him. Although they can never have more than a sexual relationship she doesn't want him to leave her so she's willing to let him control her and tell her what to do. She's attached to him to the point where she thinks no one can love her as he does. She believes no one else loves her but him since she doesn't get it from other people.

The song and the book connect because both the singer and Charlie are in sexual relationships where their partner has no regard for their wellbeing and only cares about themselves while all they want is for their partner to care about them and to love them. While Charlie does start by defending herself and getting angry at Riley she slowly starts to remember how bad of a relationship they have but she ends up always forgiving him solely for the reason that she has never had this type of attention from a man. The relationship between Charlie and Riley and their fight in the scene is exactly what the song talks about.
