REFLECTION ON STORM OF THE CENTURY DISCUSSION

“We’ll be having a dilemma game today.”

     Dilemma. Dilemma is a situation where a difficult choice has to be made between two or more options, especially mutually undesirable ones. To be honest, I hate this situation because I don’t like to be pressure. It was like, you have to choose something over something but you have to consider the other something. It is complicated, I know. It is the way of life, the turns and twists, the ups and downs and the starts and stops. Eventually, you have to choose one and one only but if you can have both, then consider yourself lucky. 

     We were playing a lot of dilemma games on Storm of the Century, Train to Busan and the railway. All of these stories portrayed the same element which is selfish. Sometimes, at some points, you have to be selfish in order to have what you want but remember that the world does not revolve around you only. You have to consider the people around you, the chances that your decision might affect others. Ignorance might be bliss but it is irresponsible and dangerous too. 

     I have experienced this before back when I was twelve, after sitting for my UPSR examination. When I was busy filling out the admission for secondary schools form, I got this one offer letter to the one and only sport's school in Penang, SMK Mutiara Impian. I wanted to go to Sekolah Sukan Bukit Jalil so bad, so I thought this was a good started for me. When I told my parents about it, they don’t seem to find it pleasant. They wanted me to go to some prestigious schools such as the MRSMs and SBPs as they can ‘guarantee’ me a bright future for my education and life. I was stuck between my parents’ wish and my own dream. So, after a lot of arguing, tantrums, and fighting, I eventually declined the offer. It was hard back then because this kind of opportunity only comes once but I never regret it. Someone told me that the best feeling in this world is to know that your parents are smiling because of you and disappointing your parents is the worst feeling rather than them being mad at you.
