The way that Christopher acts sometimes is quite odd, which is why I drew this face. It is wondering why someone would act like this, but the fact that Christopher has autism makes this mildly acceptable. I feel like some of the parts in the book, like the maths puzzles also allow for this face, as I can not follow most of them! I feel like this book can be quite muddled up at times as well and use repetitive language such as 'and then he said, and then I said,' which can also apply the emoji below, as it does not captivate the reader as much.

The emoji I chose is a confused person. This is because Christopher's life is confusing and very different from ours. The reason why I think Christopher's life is very confusing because his decisions are odd. For example, Christopher's decision to hide in a shelf and his decision to go looking for his rat in the train tracks. These decisions are not normal, which confused
me.
Also while reading the book, I had very little knowledge on autism so I was very confused when he was amazing at maths and phsyics , this is because I thought mentally challenged people struggled in these areas. Despite Christopher's autism I still thought his decisions were confusing.

Sometimes the way that Mark Haddon writes, while it helps to show how Christopher thinks, makes it very bland and slow, such as passages with conversations like, "Then he said...
Then I said...
Then he said," etc.
I find the way Christopher reacts to thing a little odd, but it is mostly other peoples reactions that seem absurd. It is Christopher's decision that everything needs to be explained in a lot of detail that is what makes me look like my drawing. I don't know how to show that I understand him though, and that I don't look down on him. He has just been given an unfortunate situation.

This emoji shows that I had mixed thoughts about Christopher. I felt curious about his way of thinking and how he acted towards problems in life. I also sometimes found myself being intrigued by the fact that he sometimes overreacts to things that happen in his life.
I sometimes felt pity towards Christopher, since his autism made him do things that were not right, like hitting a policeman.
Christopher also sometimes made me feel a bit frustrated, but I did try to remember that he had autism. I was quite happy, though, because despite his autism, Christopher went for the math test he really wanted to, and he got an A as well. I think that my reactions to Christopher changed as I progressed through the book, as he performed different actions and made and also solved problems

The reason I feel this way about Christopher is because he does not listen to his parents when his father tells him to stay out of other people's business. This also shows pity for him because his dad lied to him about his mother and when his dad told him that he killed the dog. Christopher would have felt sad that his father was a murderer and that he had lied to him about his mother. He was someone that didn't listen to what other people say and is always willing to find out more about things like in the book when he is curious about the 🤬. He doesn't stop looking for answers.

I have drawn a confused emoji, with question marks as eyes. Reading TCI, I have found Christopher to be a very interesting character. Some of his actions are understandable, as he suffers with autism, and I feel sorry for him in some parts of the book when he can't live a peaceful life in public places without deeply noticing everything. When buying a ticket from the Swindon train station, Christopher does not understand the man behind the desk was busy with another customer, and when Christopher unknowingly interrupts, he is rudely sworn at, and this happens in many other situations throughout the novel. In other sections, Christopher can be slightly impudent, finding loop-holes in rules his father and others in his life have set, in order to carry on with his detective work which his father has specifically told him not to. Overall I feel pity but also slight annoyance at times with Christopher's character, and I have learnt that it can be hard to differentiate between actions resulting from autism or just immature behaviour.

I drew this emoji because I find Christopher to be quite interesting. He is different to other characters because of the way he behaves. It really makes you think if his acts can be justified or not. For example, he hit the police officer which caused a bigger problem when he could try to control the urge to hit him. Since he has autism we can empathise with his decisions, behaviour and actions but sometimes it is unacceptable. The way he acts is quite unusual but to him it seems quite normal. As he has autism it is unfair if his parents become angry at him for that reason.

One of the reasons he gave for leaving the house was that his father lied and therefore he is scary. To me this reaction seems to be a bit excessive. He often overreacts yet his talent in some fields is sometimes surprising. Overall, my initial reaction would be confusion and curiosity.

My emoji shows my reaction of confusion, frustration and wonder at the character of Christopher. I was confused at this character, as he seemed so logical, and yet did silly things like not eat anything that was yellow, and counted cars to see if he would have a good day. As I continued reading, I became frustrated with the character of Christopher, as he continuously put himself before others, seemingly not caring for what they may be feeling, even though he could not live without them. I wondered why he did these things, and if it was the Autism that caused all of this, or whether it was a combination of Autism and his personality. Overall, this character was really interesting, and it was nice to be able to get a glimpse into the life an autistic person may live.

He reacts to things strangely sometimes which I find understandable due to his autism. It was always interesting to see how he would react to a situation when we ourselves may react to it much differently. His view on life is quite interesting, but occasionally I felt sorry for him, like on occasions where he overreacted to situations or jumped to irrational conclusions, and I felt sorry for him because he couldn't really react to certain situations rationally.
Overall my reaction to Christopher was interest, a little bit of pity, and some curiousity to see what he'll do next.

I have used this emoji because I found Christopher to be an interesting character, as it gave some insight into the life of an autistic kid. The book made me think about how Christopher perceives the world differently from other people, and how others may think of him.

It is clear from the start that Christopher has a clear skill for maths and science. It seemed, however, that Christopher has a hard time thinking abstract and understanding other people and their emotions. I think that it is not just Christopher that doesn't understand other people, but there are others who do not understand Christopher.

When I was first introduced to Christopher I was feeling many different emotions at the same time. The emoji that I have drawn portratys these emotions well. The mouth line represents feeling both frustrated and confused at the same time. Christopher could be very frustrating and irritating because of how he reacted to diiferent situations. These reactions that Christopher had also often left me confused about why he would do this. For example, he disobeys his father when his father very specifically says not to do anymore investigating who killed Wellington. Christopher continues to investigate around the specific rules of his promise even though he knows that his father will be upset. This shows that even though he understands that by continuing to investigate he will hurt his father's feeling he still does so for his personal benefit. My second emotion that came straight after my feeling of confusion and frustration was understanding. This is shown through the eyes of my emoji. The eyebrows are shaped in a way that foten suugests the character being sympathetic. I had this emotion because I understood that Christopher has autism and can therefore sometimes not control his emotions. It also makes him do things differently as he sees the world differently.

The way that he acts is somewhat odd and most of the time you have to think about how you believe he acts the way he does it.

The text was interesting as well because he was basically every stereotype of an autistic person but somewhat on the less extreme area of the spectrum. Some stereotypes are, obsession with maths and science, rocking, groaning, screaming, hitting others, reciting pi, and his lack of social skills.

The book gave us a special perspective which therefore gives us a better understanding of the autism spectrum.

My reaction to Christopher is that he can be frustrating at times by making wrong decisions but it is not his fault because he did not choose to be autistic. For example, he disobeyed his father and left the house, leaving his father anxious. However, he thought as if he could not trust his father anymore, and that is what he thought was the best thing to do at that time. Although his decision was wrong, that is just the way he thinks. Sometimes his behavior and choices may be different but it is imperative to comprehend that everybody is different.

My reaction to Christopher is one of understanding and satisfaction.

I understanding Christopher's situation and the reasons for his behaviour. His autism makes things difficult for him. My satisfaction is that Christopher still gets a happy ending at the end. I also like that he is really special and intelligent, almost like sacrificing social skills for intelligence. Christopher's reasoning is also something I really really like and appreciate. I try to replicate his way of thinking but...

The genuinity of Chris is another quality that I simply adore. It is rare to have such genuinity in anyone and to remain so is even more of a challenge.

I would not use all of Christopher's attributes and traits as a role-model (because there are flaws, obviously) but his other aspects are all amazing qualities to possess. Traits like persistence, bravery, and planning are all rare and essential to a successful future. Having more social capabilities would definitely help, but would not be necessary, especially for someone like Chris, who enjoys being alone and thus enjoys the silence and peaceful of isolation.

Artists Notes:

My drawing is a little distorted due to having to redraw my picture a few times. This irritated me so I kind of just ad-libbed this one (with Google backing me). The hand was drawn badly and was (as suggested by Chris Fang) supposed to be on my visual representation's chin. The face is also of an unnatural shape and that is due to this being an emoji and me using a touchpad

My emoji shows an expression of interest and wonder. Throughout the text, Christopher was shown to have a very black-and-white interpretation of the world, and to justify his actions through this rigid 'rule book'. For example, because he is so set on his belief that lies, no matter the intention behind them, are always wrong. When he is told that he isn't allowed to write in his notebook anymore, he continues to do so anyway, and reasons that, because he technically did not promise that he wouldn't continue to write it in another notebook, by doing so, he is not technically lying or breaking any promises. Rather than respecting this request out of the observation of how the book made his father feel, Chris acted based on his extreme understanding of right, wrong, truth and deception. I found this thought process interesting regarding the prevalence of mindsets like these in autistic people. Because the book is written from Chris' perspective, the reader has the opportunity to properly immerse them self in this way of thinking, and see its effects.

This is an attempt at a curious face. I drew this since when I read abut Christopher I found him interesting and I wondered how the world would look through his eyes and if the actions of Christopher occurred in real life or if it was exaggerated for the sake of the book.

The emoji that I have drawn shows curiosity and frustration. When I first encountered the character of Christopher I was interested to see how he viewed the world and amazed at his mathematical skills. This emoji also shows frustration because I was frustrated many times during the book because Christopher encountered many difficult situations and during those times I felt sympathy for him. However Christopher often did things that where wrong such as disobeying his father and the police officer even when he was aware of his actions. Sometimes it was difficult to understand him because I don't know what it feels like to have Autism.

I have tried to draw an emoji that shows a face of interest and intrigue. The way Christopher is able to solve such complicated maths equations and such was amazing to me. I also found it intriguing see the world from Christopher's point of view, and it gave me a better indication of how people on the autism spectrum see the world and others. The fact that Christopher also cares so deeply for wellington and Toby is also intriguing, because it shows that even though me may seem hard on the outside because of his autism, he is actually a very caring person who experiences the world in a unique way.

When first introduced to Christopher, I did not know how to react. I found some of his reactions to situations frustrating or irritating, but knew that he only reacted in this way because of his autism. I tried to remind myself of this whenever he did something that I found irritating. At times I also felt slightly sorry for Christopher, because I hate feeling unsafe, and it was the fact that Christopher felt unsafe that caused him to run away from his father and try to find his mother. I liked the fact that Christopher cared so deeply for animals, such as Wellington and Toby the rat, so overall my reaction was a little bit irritated, a little bit understanding, and quite curious to see where the novel would take me.

This shows me being sad and pitying Christopher. He may seem like a bad person on the outside, but it's not his fault that he has Autism. When he was hugging the dead dog and he hit a police office, he didn't know how to react. Nobody chooses to be Autistic, and this is what makes me sad.

I think Christopher is a slightly confused, curious and straightforward person, as well as slightly detached. I think the reason I perceive Christopher this way is because of how he acts, he is very blunt but sometimes doesn't understand simple things, like metaphors. Being exposed to his way of thinking explains why he behaves the way he does, which is based entirely on logic, even conversations, because it is "what you're meant to say". Logic can't explain behavior and emotions, which is why I think he is detached, hence the blank face.
