Did you know that the flavor and odor of garlic comes from the sulfur compounds formed from allicin? Allicin is the major component of garlic's bio-active compounds formed when garlic bulbs are chopped, crushed or damaged.

Garlic is used best raw for microbial properties. However cooked garlic has an equal or sometimes even higher value when cooked.

Whether you use garlic raw or cooked, you can increase it's health benefits by chopping or crushing it and letting it sit before eating it or heating it.

The chopping activates allinase enzyme in the garlic's cells and the sitting allows the enzymes to convert some of the garlic's allin into allicin. Allicin then rapidly breaks down to form a variety of organosulfur compounds.

Scientists recommend allowing garlic to stand for 10 minutes after chopping or crushing before cooking it.

(Axe, 2016) & (National Cancer Institute, 2008)

Garlic is probably safe for most people in the amounts usually eaten in foods.

Since all garlic preparations are not the same, it is difficult to determine the exact amount of garlic that may be needed to reduce cancer risk. Also the active compounds present in garlic may lose their effectiveness with time, handling and processing.

The World Health Organization's (WHO) guidelines for general health promotion for adults is a daily dose of 2 to 5 g of fresh garlic (approximately one clove), 0.4-1.2 g of dried garlic powder, 2 to 5 mg of garlic oil, 300 to 1,000 mg of garlic extract, or other formulations that are equal to 2 to 5 mg of allicin.

Garlic bulbs are sometimes contaminated with the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. C. botulinum can grow and produce botulinum toxin in garlic-in-oil products that are not refrigerated and do not contain antibacterial properties.

Chemical burns, contact dermatitis and bronchial asthma can occur when garlic is applied to the skin.

Garlic should be avoided by people who are prone to stomach conditions such as ulcers, as it can exacerbate the condition or cause new ones.

Garlic supplements should be discontinued a week or two before undergoing surgery because of their potential for increasing bleeding time.

Tell all your health care providers about any complementary or integrative health approaches you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Speak to your doctor about consuming raw garlic if you take blood thinners.

When taken by mouth in appropriate, small amounts for short periods of time, garlic is said to be safe for children. Garlic should never be given to children in large doses.

Talk to your doctor before consuming raw garlic if you have low blood pressure, thyroid problems or any ongoing health concerns.

During pregnancy and breast-feeding, garlic is believed to be safe in food amounts, but might be unsafe in medicinal amounts.

If you are taking insulin (dose adjustments may be required because of the occasional blood-sugar lowering effect of garlic supplements. Take with caution and consult your doctor).

The National Cancer Institute and part of the National Institutes of Health, does not recommend any dietary supplement for the prevention of cancer, but recognizes garlic as one of the several vegetables with potential anticancer properties.

(Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 2016) & (Axe, 2016) & (National Cancer Institute, 2008) & (National Center for Complemetary and Integrative Health, 2016).

Isoniazid (INH, Nydrazid)- Garlic might reduce how much isoniazid (Nydrazid, INH) the body absorbs. This might decrease how well isoniazid (Nydrazid, INH) works. Don't take garlic if you take isoniazid (Nydrazid, INH).

Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs) The body breaks down medications used for HIV/AIDS to get rid of them. Garlic can increase how fast the body breaks down some medications for HIV/AIDS. Taking garlic along with some medications used for HIV/AIDS might decrease their effectiveness.

Saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase) The body breaks down Saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase) to get rid of it. Garlic might increase how quickly the body breaks down saquinavir. Taking garlic along with saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase) might decrease the effectiveness of saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase).

Birth control pills (contraceptive drugs) Some birth control pills contain estrogen. The body breaks down the estrogen in birth control pills to get rid of it. Garlic might increase the breakdown of estrogen. Taking garlic along with birth control pills might decrease the effectivness of birth control pills. If you take birth control pills along with garlic, use an additional form of birth control such as a condom.

Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune) The effect of garlic preparations on cyclosporine may vary. Some garlic preparations containing allicin might decrease the effectiveness of cyclosporine. However, other garlic preparations containing allin and allinase may not. Until more is known about this possible interaction, use caution when taking garlic if you are also taking cyclosporine.

Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) substrates- Some medications are changed and broken down by the liver. Garlic oil might decrease how quickly the liver breaks down some medications. Taking garlic oil along with some medications that are changed by the liver can increase the effects and side effects of your medication. Before taking garlic oil, talk to your healthcare provider if you take any medications that are changed by the liver.

Medications that slow blood-clotting (anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs)- Garlic might slow blood-clotting. Taking garlic along with medications that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding.

Warfarin (coumadin)- Warfarin (coumadin) is used to slow blood clotting. Garlic might increase the effectiveness of warfarin (coumadin) Taking garlic along with warfarin (coumadin) might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding. Be sure to have your blood checked regularly. The dose of warfarin (coumadin) might need to be changed. (emedicinehealth, 2016).

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health some studies indicate that certain groups of people who eat more garlic may be less likely to develop certain cancers, such as stomach and colon cancers. However, garlic in dietary form has not been shown to help reduce the risk of these cancers.

The National Cancer Institute recognizes garlic as one of the several vegetables with potential anticancer properties but does not recommend using garlic dietary supplements for cancer prevention.

Allium vegetables, especially garlic and onions, and their bioactive sulfur compounds are believed to have effects at each stage of cancer formation and affect many biological processes that modify cancer risk.

According to the National Cancer Institute, "Several population studies show an association between increased intake of garlic and reduced risk of certain cancers, including cancers of the stomach, colon, esophagus, pancreas and breast".

The National Cancer Institute also explains that "protective effects of garlic may arise from its antibacterial properties or from its ability to block the formation of cancer-causing substances, halt the activation of cancer-causing substances, enhance DNA repair, reduce cell proliferation, or induce cell death".

Garlic also shows promise when treating cancer. Garlic's organosulfur compounds including DATS, DADS, ajoene, and S-allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC), have been found to induce cell cycle arrest when added to cancer cells in vitro experiments. In addition, these sulfur compounds have been found to induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) when added to various cancer cell lines grown in culture.

Taking liquid garlic extract and S-allylcysteine (SAC) orally has also been reported to increase cancer cell death, an animal model of oral cancer.

In general garlic is clearly showing some real cancer discouraging and fighting abilities that should not be ignored or discounted.

Garlic may stimulate both humoral and cellular immunity, causing T-cell proliferation, restoring suppressed anitbody responses and stimulating macrophage cytotoxicity on tumor cells. It may increase selenium absorption with possible protection against tumorigenesis. In addition, garlic may protect against certain cancers by halting cell cycle progression and including apoptosis of cancer cells as well as by decreasing angiogenesis and influencing carcinogen matabolism.

Did you know that Hippocrates, the famous Greek physician prescribed eating garlic as a treatment for cancers?

A study done by City's Memorial Sloan-Kettering's John T. Pinto, Ph.D., and colleagues, looked at the effects of major water-soluble compounds dervied from aged garlic extract (S-allylcysteine and S-allylmercaptocysteine) on cultured (test-tube) human prostate cancer cells. Results: "Within 30 minutes of exposure" to either of the compounds, proteins that are usually "hopped up" (present at heightened levels) as prostate tumors grow were suppressed. Intracellular levels of the reduced (antioxidant) for of glutathione were increased; and a special enzyme (ornithine decarboxylase) which helps produce those "bad-guy" proteins were blocked.

A major Japanese study by Hiroshima University Hospital, Department of Internal Medicine, Kawasaki Medical School and Onomichi General Hospital conducted a human clinical trial on the effect of Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) on colorectal adenomas (tumor growth). Patients were of ages 40-79 years old and had colorectal adenomas. Among 51 enrolled patients (25 in the active group, 26 in the control group), 37 patients (19 in the active group and 18 in the control group) completed the study. Two dosage preparations of AGE were used. An active high-dose form consisted of 6 capsules containing the equivalent of 2.4 mL of AGE daily. The control, low-dose form consisted of 6 capsules, containing the the equivalent of 0.16 mL of AGE daily. Due to IRB approval and ethical reasons, in addition to the blinded manner, a low concentration of AGE was needed to function as the control preparation since both patients in both groups carry colon cancer. Each members of each group took 3 capsules twice a day for 12 months. Follow-up large bowel endoscopy was performed at 6 and 12 months after intake of either preparation, and the endoscopists recorded the location and size of any and all colorectal adenomas. Results: The number of adenomas in the control group proportionately increased to 0.56+-0.22 (means +-SE) at 6 months after the study. At 12 months it rose to 1.44+-0.41 whereas the number of adenomas in the active group was suppressed to 0.68+-0.38 at 12 months (P<0.05). Conclusions: The results of this trial, and or previous epidemiological and basic studies that are supportive and consistent with this trial, suggests that Aged Garlic Extract has a suppressive effect on the progression of colorectal adenomas in humans.

The Iowa Women's Study is a large prospective study investigating whether diet, distribution of body fat and other risk factors are related to cancer incidence in older women. Findings from the study showed a strong association between garlic consumption and colon cancer risk. Women who consumed the highest amounts of garlic had a 50% lower risk of cancer at the distal colon compared with women who had the lowest level of garlic consumption.

A study in France found that increased garlic consumption was associated with a statistically significant reduction in breast cancer risk. After considering total calorie intake and other established risk factors, breast cancer risk was reduced in those consuming greater amounts of fiber, garlic and onions.

(House et. al., 2013) & (Axe, 2016) & (National Cancer Institute, 2008).
