Semboyan Bhinneka Tunggal Ika diusulkan oleh Muhammad Yamin dalam sidang BPUPKI pertama yang digelar pada 29 Mei hingga 1 Juni 1945. Moh. Yamin menyebut frasa Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, lalu I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa sontak meneruskan frasa tersebut dengan “Tan hana dharma mangrwa”, seperti yang tertulis dalam Kitab Sutasoma.

  Ide penulisan lagu Indonesia Raya bermula saat WR Supratman membaca tulisan di majalah terbitan Solo, Jawa Tengah, bernama Timbul. Dalam buku tersebut tertulis "Alangkah baiknya jika ada seorang pemuda Indonesia yang dapat menciptakan lagu kebangsaan, karena bangsa-bangsa lain sudah memiliki lagu kebangsaan mereka sendiri."
