In my opinion the 1970s definitely was the most influential decade for rock and roll and one of the most influential for music overall. A lot of this had to do with the new technology that was being invented and then introduced into the mainstream. However in the case of rock and roll, the influences came from guitarists and lyricists, as well as the guitars being played.

I'm going to be focusing on guitar related stuff because it's more of my area of expertise. Some of the greatest guitarists of all time were alive and at the forefront of the music industry. Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), and Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen), among others. These men are in a league of their own, and I know for sure that Mark Knopfler is still playing to this day. (Listen to "Boom, Like That" - Mark Knopfler)

During the prime of these guitarists some of the most well known songs in rock were released. Sultans of Swing, Stairway to Heaven, and the whole of Van Halen's first two albums.

We have yet to talk about guitars. The best electric guitars of the time and still today were becoming widely known by the late 60s and early 70s - The Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul. Both of these were initially released in the 50s and had their best years in the 50s and 60s. However, guitars released in these years were carried into the 70s and beyond by the names I have previously mentioned. Jimi Hendrix and Mark Knopfler played the Stratocaster primarily, while Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Page preferred the Les Paul and Jimmy Page also often played a Telecaster, the precursor to the Strat.

With all of this wonderful technology and talent it makes sense that the 70s would be the most influential decade for rock and roll.
