Oligarchy was the first type of government where aristocrats (rich landowners) ruled. This government wasn't fair and common people had no say in the government, needless to say they didn't like it. Eventually they were ready to end this aristocracy.

A tyrant named Pisistratus came into power since the Athenians were over the unfair Oligarchy. Unlike today, tyrants then were considered good leaders. He created nice festivals, built temples, and other things to help unite the city of Athens. This created a safer and happier environment which the Athenians enjoyed.
