But the impending water crisis is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore – especially for those who are already feeling its effects.<br><br></div><div>To be sure, some improvements in water management have been made in recent years. But they have come incrementally, at far too slow a pace to address the problem effectively.<br><br></div><div>To help kick-start progress, major multinational companies like Nestlé, Coca-Cola, SABMiller and Unilever – which have long emphasized to their investors the challenge that water scarcity poses for their businesses, not to mention the communities in which they operate – are working to improve water availability, quality and sustainability. Their success will require an innovative strategy that upends entrenched assumptions about – and approaches to – water-related problems.<br><br></div><div>For example, the prevailing view that the world needs good water management, though accurate, is too narrow. Water management should not be regarded as an end in itself – a single-variant solution for a single-variant problem – but as a means to several ends, including environmental conservation and social and economic development.<br><br></div><div>Viewed in this broader context, many of the paradigms, practices and processes that are currently being used to manage communities’ water resources must change. Given that competition for water resources cannot be disentangled from competition for, say, food and energy, it cannot be addressed independently. Multivariant problems demand multivariant solutions.<br><br></div><div>Complicating matters further, these problems’ backdrop is likely to change considerably over the next few decades, owing to demographic shifts, population growth, urbanization, migration within and among countries, globalization, trade liberalization and rapid expansion of middle classes in the developing world. These shifts will accompany rapid industrialization and advances in science and technology (especially information and communications technology), and will transform dietary habits and consumption patterns.<br><br></div><div>As a result, water-consumption patterns will change considerably, including indirectly, through shifts in agriculture, energy and land use. Indeed, these linkages are already evident in many parts of the world. For example, in many Asian countries – including India, China, and Pakistan – groundwater levels are declining at an alarming rate, owing to over-extraction and energy subsidies.<br><br></div><div>For India, the problem began in the 1970s, when major donors encouraged the government to provide farmers with free electricity for irrigation. The subsidies were manageable at first, and achieved their goal of boosting food production in states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.<br><br></div><div>But the policy removed the incentive for farmers to limit the amount of water they pumped. They had to invest only in installing the actual pumps – and they did so willingly, resulting in a total of 23 million water pumps today.<br><br></div><div>This profligacy has taken a serious toll on groundwater levels, forcing the tube-wells from which the water is pumped to be installed ever more deeply. According to the <a href="http://www.thirdworldcentre.org/epubli.html">Third World Center for Water Management</a>, the amount of electricity required to pump water in India has doubled – and, in some cases, even tripled – in the last decade alone, as tube-wells have moved from 10-15 meters (32-50 feet) to 200-400 meters (650-1300 feet) deep. The increasing depth requires 3-4 times more horsepower for each pump.<br><br></div><div>Under these conditions, state water ministries have few options for making groundwater irrigation sustainable. With the relentless increase in electricity subsidies, which are squeezing the energy sector, it is difficult to devise effective policies to stem over-pumping.<br><br></div><div>The water sector will have to react to developments in the energy and other sectors, over which, despite close ties, it has very limited control. Coordinating the various sectors’ policies effectively will be difficult, to say the least.<br><br></div><div>It may sound daunting, but the reality is that these challenges are surmountable – if, that is, our leaders commit to tackling them. We already have the needed technology, know-how, experience and even financing. With strong political will, sustained pressure from an informed public and a “can do” attitude from water professionals and institutions pursuing intersectoral cooperation, the world’s water-management problems can be addressed effectively.<br><br></div><div>But we must act now.          <description><![CDATA[<div>As the article mentioned, there is no single fix to the water crisis as there are so many factors that contribute to the scarcity of water. Not only do we need to manage our water usage, we also need to find ways to more productively purify and replenish our water. This all starts with informing the public of what is <em>really</em> happening to the earth's water. Conservation is the next step. We as human beings would benefit greatly by learning the difference between need and want. We need water to survive but we want 30 minute steaming hot showers. Learning to use the minimal amount of water possible during our hygenic routines could really help. An idea that I have would be water allowances. A water allowances would be handed out to every piece of property or business regarding how many gallons of water they are allowed to consume throughout the day. Each water allowance would take into consideration the number of people/livestock living on the property or what kind of business they are running. Once they hit the amount of gallons they are allowed per day, the water is shut off. Not only would this conserve water, but it would also teach people how to make rational decisions when it comes to water instead of using it carelessly.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>An International Drought?- Lauren Corley</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As I go to take a sip from my plastic water bottle while reading the center article for this discussion, I am reminded of how wasteful this product truly is. While individuals in third world countries are suffering from poor water misusage and allocation due to government disorganization, I am sitting here enjoying clean, cold water from a bottle made of recycled materials. This realization leads me to one potential solution, reusable water. We have the technology to purify water utilized in washing dishes, clothes, houses, and so much more. We can even purify salt water for human use, yet this process is expensive. The way we recycle water could be diversified to allow for a greater amount of water to be saved towards the general supply. In expansion, world governments should also enact a mandatory water purifier to be placed within business residences as well as a few personal homes for the sake of saving both water and plastic that are used in the production and consumption of bottled water. If certain businesses don't receive and maintain a hygenic purifier, they should be taxed a certain allowance every year for refusing to abide by this environmental regulation. Furthermore, we should educate individuals on the benefits of a vegetarian or vegan diet which tremendously cuts back on water usage in the agricultural industry. Vegetarians are easing the water crisis by cutting out meat which takes up to 1,800 gallons of water to produce as per the production rate for ground beef. Vegetables such as chick peas only require 257 gallons of water per pound produced; a stark contrast to the outrageous amount needed to make ground beef. These diets also tend to cut back on plastic usage and wastefulness in general-a positive outlook for our future environment. While there are a multitude of solutions to be had when it comes to the impending water crisis facing our planet, all share the common ground of aiding those in significant need. A goal we should all cherish and presume to collaborate on in order to improve our environment and the well-being of others in hopes of eliminating environmental issues and human suffering due to a lack of food, clean water, shelter, clothes, and medication. While we view these items from a western perspective, others around the world would trade anything for these necessities. So while we collaborate and question our actions towards this crisis, remember that we are doing so for the benefit of humanity itself, a noble goal for the welfare of the world.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Where the good water go?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Well water is every where and never is gone it just might not be in that location anymore. Places that receive less water should store water in a certain type of machine to keep the water moving (still water isn't good water). We really just need to filter the ocean water, because it's water but just has a lot of bacteria and garbage in it due to careless people. We could always conserve water and&nbsp; use less than what we think is needed. So others can have water too and we really won't be having this water crisis at all.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Currently, the world is under severe pressure as a result of the worldwide water crisis. It is of vital importance that political leaders, and the people as a whole work together to solve this issue. There have been a variety of solutions proposed and perhaps with the correct amount of force, some of those changes could be made. However, the world needs a simpler as well as more immediate solution to this issue.&nbsp;<br><br>I believe that if the water in septic systems is recycled for use in the house as well as the outdoors, then a large amount of water could be conserved. For example, when a toilet is flushed, a great deal of water is used to wash waste through the pipes. If this water could be reused repeatedly rather than simply going down the drain, people could save significantly more water for drinking, bathing, and other vital uses of the resource. People could harness the powers of a filtering-purification system, so that the liquid that is in the septic tank is sifted and sanitized for reuse in the household.<br><br></div><div>If we all work together to protect our water supplies, water will hopefully one day be a need that is not in great scarcity and endangerment of disappearing.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;I believe the first step in saving water is educating others in how they can save their own water, be it at home, at work, in school, or wherever they may go in their day-to-day lives. One way we can save water (and possibly lower our water bills) is by collecting rainwater that can be used for washing cars, or watering a garden, instead of using our own tap water that may need to be used for for important things like consumption or hygiene. One way people could save water in their every day routines is by scheduling and keeping track of how much water they are using. They can limit themselves to a certain amount of time in the shower, time to brush teeth, or amount of water to drink in a day. This way, water is not going to waste, and they are only using just as much as they need, without having too much or too little.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>The Global Water Crisis and its Affinity to Catastrophe - Nishae Daley</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>To work towards a solution for global (and even local) water crises, it's crucial to understand just what they are. Water crises can best be understood by taking a comprehensive look at the principals of economics. Scarcity, for example, is simply when the unlimited desire for either a good or service, is exceeded by the available product. This principal is applied to the world’s water supply, and we can deduce that a water crisis occurs when the quantity of clean drinking water isn’t sufficient enough to support a region. Before looking at the article, I was under the impression that technological development was the best solution to this issue. I thought that if we can develop better, more efficient ways to purify water, then the problem could be alleviated. But, the fact is, we’re simply just running out of water to purify, our groundwater supplies are ridiculously depleted. And it’s not technology that we need, because, as stated by the article — “We already have the needed technology, know-how, experience and even financing”. What is crucial here, is awareness and prioritization. We need to reinstate policies that place limits on water use, as many of them have been eradicated. We need better communication as a global community in order to develop some sort of system for resource allocation. An excessive amount of water is wasted in developed countries (ie. the US), and there’s a stark discrepancy between how we use water, and how other countries do. The technological prowess that say, The United States and China, possess could undeniably help contribute to better ways to produce clean water sources in a manner that does not further deplete our natural resources. We need to be capable of global communication and collaboration to be able to work towards solving this problem.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Water is the most abundant natural resource on earth, yet it is also the biggest problem facing poorer nations today. During natural disasters, people distribute bottled and purified water to people in need, so why couldn't we just do that in Africa? It sounds easy, but it's not that simple. Considering how much it costs to purify and bottle water, it's not a rational decision to give it away, no matter how much we would like to. An idea I had to help fix this crisis is to find a way to cheaply purify ocean water, much like a desalination plant but with less costs. Places such as the continent of Africa are surrounded by oceans and would benefit from having their water come from so close. In exchange for receiving good drinking water, you could ask the locals to work at the plants, which would also help create jobs and boost local economies. It may not be realistic right now, but with new scientific discovery and new technology, it could be a great solution.</div>]]></description>

One of the most relevant factors that I believe we should include in this conversation is the importance of funding for new technologies that are able to help supply safe water to our communities. Various organizations have worked to innovate and invent new technologies that filter and produce clean water. However beneficial these technologies may be, many of them are very expensive to run and implement.          <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Although the world’s water scarcity problems aren’t going to be solved tomorrow, they can be improved with considerable effort being done by the public. I believe that the first step in solving these problems is keeping the public educated. If more people were involved and were putting pressure on our elected officials and leaders about these major issues, then maybe they can start taking the necessary steps to help. But, it also can’t stop there. If more informed people were to begin getting involved and were working alongside the water professionals or other people already trying to help, then the conundrum of water management could be solved. The article <em>How to Solve the World’s Water Crisis </em>says, “We already have the needed technology, know-how, experience, and even financing.” All we need now is people who are motivated and willing to lend a hand. If more people fight for these issues to be addressed, then things can start change. Just imagine if all the public were informed with the details of the water scarcity problem, and if they were educated with ways they could start helping. For example, if more people were better informed on ways to conserve their water usage. All the water challenges people in the world are facing can be solved, and it starts with the public’s education on these serious issues.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The way I see it, in order to help this crisis we face with the scarcity and allocation of drinkable water, we need to find a way to make undrinkable water drinkable. The earth is 70-75% water, so the crisis is not the scarcity of water, but the scarcity of consumable water. So a mass production of drinkable water from ocean water would almost completely solve this problem. Of course, there’s more to it. There would need to be dozens upon dozens of water distillation plants scattered throughout the areas that need water where it’s scarce. Also, people, especially business people, never do anything if there’s no benefit for them in the end. History has proved this time and time again. So there would have to be some sort of benefit for investors and businessmen and women who put their time and effort into making this happen, but what if the benefit isn’t that hard to create? All of the salt left over from the water distillation could easily be sold over time as more water is distilled and distributed, so there would be a constant flow of benefit for the people who helped create these distillation plants.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Water and Scarcity: How can We Help the Planet?  ~Andelle L.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Water is one of the most seemingly available resources on Earth. People use it in almost everything, from agriculture and cleaning, to cooking and hygiene. Every day, people use gallons of water for their everyday needs and some wants, and unfortunately if everyone thought "Oh 70% of the planet is made up of this stuff, how can re run out of it?" the water supply will greatly decrease and it will me too late to make a change. Now like the article said there are many ways water is used up and solving the crisis with water isn't a simple 2-step process, but it's a journey to a more water efficient society as a whole. People who have easy access to water should recognize the privilege and blessing to not worry about a disease or even death from attempting to quench a thirst in such an rural area such as places in Africa or poor countries.&nbsp;To make the most effective allocation of our water, it must be a collective effort of people who are willing to cooperate and help those who are struggling. We even have the money and resources to do so, but there must be the will. There needs to be a desire to change, or it will be too late. This can be a world where the inhabitants thrive together, healthy and happy. Every drop counts.</div>]]></description>

Sure this seems cruel, but in areas where the lack of water is becoming an issue, we need to start conserving the water we have now. The next thing we need to do is to reuse the waste we have. The machine depicted takes the sludge from wastes and heats it to release the water vapor and collects it. After the water vapor is collected, the remaining sludge is passed into a fire and burned to create steam. There are now two things that the modern person uses, water and electricity. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Water Crisis Present in Our Generation- Jasmine Chennault</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Water scarcity is one of the most prevalent issues facing our generation. Water is something that is an essential to life yet its availability is decreasing by the day. One way that I believe is a step in the right direction in regards to improving this problem is to first try to make an impact as an individual. Us as individuals could greatly support the lessening of the detrimental effects of a water crisis by being mindful of our intake. This could be as simple as turning off the water while brushing your teeth, to as complex as collecting rain water and utilizing it in your daily activities. I believe that this will then lead to water awareness in the world. Countries where water scarcity is most prevalent, such as African countries, will benefit from increased water awareness. They would be prompted to explore the ideas and methods in purifying their water supplies so that there would be little waste. This way, they could supply it to their population. Overall, I believe that water scarcity is an issue we must combat.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>When I think of water I think of how its easily at my disposal. If I want some water: I just grab a bottled water, crack it open to quench my thirst, and that's that. If I need to shower, brush my teeth, cook with my mom, or soak my nails I just turn on the faucet. However, in some nations it's not that simple. Yes, we know our water is running out and yes, we try to conserve our water. We do this by taking short showers and not leaving the water on while we brush our teeth. That's great, however household only count as 10% of the water being consumed. Therefore, no matter what we do we are not saving that much. We need to put more pressure on agriculture consumption! 70% of our world's water goes to agriculture, because of improper irrigation methods. We need to start giving heavier fines and make it a global law to have proper irrigation. Maybe even adding positive incentives like extra money or farming supplies upgrades once a year for farms that follow the rules no matter what country you are in. Of course there was already something like that before. However, if we had most of the third world nations and more stable nations agree to this we would see major improvements. Another way to help the water supply could be. Throwing in ways to purify toxic or dirty water which would make more water available to places that need it. Adding more salt water conversion technology would add more water to the fresh water supply until we can get it to a healthier balance. As long as we do not get overly dependent on salt water conversion. There are so many more methods to improve if not fix the water shortage, but these are all I can think of at the moment. I hope this made sense and does not sound like a ramble. I feel if we implemented these methods along with other ones. We could make leaps and bounds fast enough to recover from the damage we have caused.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Water scarcity and the lowering levels of drinkable water today is one of the world biggest issues. Water is a must for life on Earth and with it slowly dwindling people have begun to think of ideas on how to solve this problem. One way I think we could fix this problem is by finding a way to purify saltwater to the point where it is drinkable. Although, drinking water levels are down to an alarming level their is an abundance of saltwater on Earth, the problem is that is isn't healthy for human consumption. So my idea is to someway purify the saltwater present in oceans to a point in which we could drink it, this way the water we use in sinks, showers, sewers, fire hydrants, etc. wouldn't also have to be consumed. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Obviously fresh drinking water would be a scarce commodity, in some places more than others.&nbsp; How we allocate this natural resource is left up to world governments who unfortunately don’t always have their citizens’ best interests at heart, not to mention the capital to drive change.&nbsp; There are plenty of charitable organizations that go out and help citizens in third world countries dig wells and introduce more modernized ways of farming and water retention.&nbsp; Clearly this is not enough, education is helpful on a small scale, but as citizens of this planet we need to be mindful of how to fix this problem on a global scale.&nbsp; I would image it would be hard to limit people to a certain amount of water to be used. I really think the main issue is an overpopulation problem of the planet.&nbsp; Since there is not a lot you can do about this in the short term, I think governments have to take the initiative to help one another with a scientific and technological approach to our planet’s scarcity issue with fresh water.&nbsp; One interesting thing I have seen is the UAE is proposing to create an artificial mountain.&nbsp; Also, China seeds clouds to provide needed rain for crops.&nbsp; I definitely believe it is a country’s duty to manage their water resources to provide for their citizens, and if we all work together and collaborate on the issue we are smart enough to devise a solution that benefits everyone.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>It's important to understand 'the world water crisis' isn't new; it's a topic that has been discussed for a while. Though you have many people, companies, etc. that try to help manage this in the best way possible progress is moving slow and other issues are more of a priority. It's safe to say the number one solution in fixing this issue is identifying it's a bigger problem then people want to admit. When we're able to accept that fact, then we can move on to fixing the problem. We should use all of our resources better. Which means managing our water supply "efficiently". Yes, this could mean cutting back how much water we use for showers but it could also mean educating farmers on methods of conservative irrigation, finding a way to better rid toxic waste, and collecting bottled water for those who need it. Like stated before this has been a painful issue that has affected many people, and it won't be fixed over night but with an effective plan and talented people to execute it, it can be done.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Water is the necessary component to all forms of life. Even the human bodies is composed of mostly water. So how do we go about savoring one of the most needed resources but yet the most dwindling resource? One solution, as many have said before me, is to cut off the unnecessary usages. This can be done by first finding out everything that water is being used for (which is nearly everything) on a micro level and on a macro level then put it into a list. Next go through the list and assign proficient alternatives for some if not all those items on the list. Another thing that should be done is the protection of the quality of the water we do have. Which means we need to put an end to pollution's evil reign and also allocate the government spending money to where there is money being spent on fixing and filtering the water pipe lines in an effort to prevent what happened in Flint Michigan from happening anywhere else. &nbsp;</div>]]></description>

A way to fix this issue is for a way to convert this water to clean drinkable water. Another method would be trading resources with a country that has an abundance of clean water. water management is something more countries need to be taking seriously. Eventually more countries will be suffering from this issue. Fortunately, we don't have to worry about this in America in 2018, but who knows what could happen fifty years from now. This is why this problem must be addressed now. First, water management should be of more concern to people, for example, automatic sprinklers that spray water on golf courses, front lawns etc. are a terrible waste of water. Since their automatic they are always spraying water even when it's raining, that is one easy way to begin saving water. Another way  I think the Earth's water supply could be sustained is by making saltwater drinkable. The Earth is mostly water and if we could somehow find a way to make the ocean water drinkable we could refill our world's well. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Nearly every country on the planet has a safe drinking water crisis of some sort. Yes, even in a country such as the United States. The water contamination in Flint, Michigan is just one examples that came into light recently. However, there a various countries in which the water crisis is far more scarce. Unsafe drinking water is also the cause of allowing deadly diseases to spread. In order to fix this problem, there are quite a few initiatives that can be put into effect to aid this issue. One is that we can better protect the resources of natural freshwater that that we have. Harsher regulations should be put into effect about contaminants being dumped into rivers, lakes and streams. During times of severe drought and scarcity, fair and honest rations should be put in place to insure that water isn't being wasted unnecessarily. In countries where many have to walk for miles to gain access to clean drinking water, underground wells can be built within the area. Better protecting our planet from global warming can also prevent long-lasting droughts.</div>]]></description>

I believe it is important to realize what areas are affected the most and since the water crisis has gotten increasingly worse over time, at this point I think that the best thing to do is to help save the areas that are effected the most. If the issue of contaminated and polluted water was not as far advanced as it is now, perhaps we could focus on the water crisis as one big global issue. But, I think that the best solution to helping places that have no clean water whatsoever is to learn how to manage and reduce pollution and wastes in our country. Even though the United States undoubtedly has its own (more minor) water crisis, as a more privileged nation I think that we should take action and help to establish regulations against dumping wastes and pollutants into our water and develop ideas about managing water sources and share those ideas with other nations in dire need of action. Its time for us to use our resources, our technology, and our minds to help educate other nations and try to aid them in saving their water systems and purifying the contaminated water that they have. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Water seems to be everywhere and is one of the most abundant resources in the world, so why would we ever be concerned about water becoming scarce? Water scarcity is one among the many economic issues that we face today. However, there are many ways that we can help to save our world’s well from running dry. One very important way that we can help to relieve our water crisis is by informing the people. If more people are aware of the scarcity of water, they are more likely to become aware of their consumption and take action to help relieve the problem. Our actions could consist of reducing the amount of water we use every day by taking shorter showers and turning off the water while brushing our teeth. The government could also set restrictions on the amount of water an individual can use. Another step that we can take to help the water crisis is converting salt water, in which we have an absorbent amount of in the ocean, into fresh water to increase our water supply. Setting regulations on toxic waste as well as reducing the amount of waste and pollution in water is one more way that we can help to protect our water and ensure proper water supply. <br><br></div>]]></description>
