Q1. Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?

Unfortunately, I feel that many students disregard the last commandment. I do believe that there are many violations within the others, but respecting individuals I’ve noticed has been limited. As I have been on social media, I’ve seen others get cyber bullied, and disrespected for the things that they post and who they are. We all learned in kindergarten what is the golden rule. It is simply to treat others with the respect that you would want for yourself, but that has simply gone out the window regarding social media. I feel that since there is a screen/barrier between the person spewing their hatred, they’re more inclined to say heinous things and ideas.

Q2. Why do you think these violations occur?

I believe that these violations occur because there is no regulation within these spaces. There is a widespread of social media users, and Engagement with their devices. It is hard to keep track of every single person who is using problematic language. Before you sign on to the apps, They always instruct others to use kindness while on the sources. It is simply something they have to do, they don’t necessarily care about the message. Since they are focused on the profit of the app, The actual users are overlooked.

Q3. What do you think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?

Of course, more regulation throughout the act would be simple answer. I have learned that some people can be reported and their access to the media can be revoked. I think that the power of reporting others should be taken more seriously. Even after one hateful comment, the app/ company should be able to recognize the integrity of it and limit their access. I believe that people would be more hesitant about using such profanity. Hopefully our online spaces can improve and show kindness wherever we reside.
