April 22, 1915

Even though poison gas was only responsible for a tiny portion of the war's overall fatalities, its impacts were widespread and catastrophic. Gas was first used by the Germans in the Battle of Second Ypres in 1915.
I'ts effectiveness relied not only on the type of gas and the complexity of its delivery technique but also frequently on the weather conditions of the day. However, poison gas ended up being the most significant psychological weapon of the conflict, and both troops and engineers devoted a significant amount of their time and energy to preparing for and avoiding the frightening (and, to many, immoral) possibility of death.
